Always a favorite Powhatan event, the annual Labor Day Parade will be held in Powhatan’s historic Village area on Sept. 6. The event will kick off at 11 a.m. and feature all of the food and entertainment residents have enjoyed in years past.

Bring in the ‘New’…
According to Lynne Beach of the Powhatan Rescue Squad, the theme for this year’s parade will be ‘A New Look for Powhatan.’ In keeping with that theme, the Grand Marshall for 2010 will be new Powhatan Fire Chief Rick Bucher.

The parade will also feature the new red and white ambulance acquired by the rescue squad and underscore the move to a new united Fire/EMS organization.

Getting things started…
One change this year is the starting location of the parade, which has been moved from in front of Powhatan Junior High School to Fighting Creek Park.

What to expect…
Among those expected to be part of this year’s parade are the Powhatan High School Marching Band, the Powhatan High School Dance Team, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Checker Cab Club and the Sound Movement Performing Arts Academy.

Those who will have booths on the Courthouse Green will include Powhatan Strikers Baseball, Striking Silver Jewelry Parties, Cherry Hill Ice Cream, Central Virginia Bank, Uncle Curt & Hugs (clowns), Becky’s Blooms and Baskets and Pampered Chef. For more information, contact the Powhatan Rescue Squad at (804) 598-2911.

Editor’s note: The above story has been edited to correct the starting time of the parade.

I hope all “candy throwers” at this year parade be mindful that ALL children loves candy.
