Last Friday marked a milestone for three Powhatan High School graduates, as they officially completed United States Coast Guard boot camp. The families of Seamen Jason W. Baltz , Matthew W. Dunnigan and Jesse Reed

travelled to the Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May, New Jersey to attend the graduation ceremony, which marked the end of eight weeks of intensive training in water safety and survival, military customs and courtesies, seamanship skills, first aid, fire fighting and marksmanship.

Coast Guard Senior Chief (Ret.) Michael Kreynus, a Powhatan resident who mentored the young men as they prepared for basic training and also attended the graduation last Friday, said the new inductees received a tremedous show of support during the ceremony.

“It was wonderful,” he said. “I have never heard so much cheering and seen so much flag waving in all of my life.”

Matthew Dunnigan is my son and I couldnt be any prouder of him. It seems like only yesterday he was just a little boy and look at him now. Matthew, Jesse and Jason are all fine young men w/ a bright future ahead of them no matter where life leads them. I have been blessed to have Matthew in my life and to have known both Jesse and Jason. God keep them safe as they protect each and every one us. Semper Paratus.

Congratulations sailors.  You’ve got lots of work, but also good times ahead.  Wishing you the best of luck.  My whole family flew to Chicago in 1978 for my Navy Boot Camp graduation, and it was awesome, just to have the support from family.  Good luck and stay safe.

I’d say that’s three young men that grew up a lot in the past eight weeks. Let them guys grow some hair, their frickin’ heads are gonna get cold! Way To Go you guys! Jason, I know your Mom and Dad has to be really proud. Seriously consider the career thing. You won’t regret it once you start getting that monthly check, PLUS, the medical benefits.
