Woman convicted of embezzling $77,000 from Elam Animal Hospital

A Powhatan woman was convicted August 10 of stealing nearly $77,000 from her former employer.

Diane Michael worked as the office manager at Elam Animal Hospital from June 2004 until November 2008.

Her duties, according to the Commonwealth, included “reconciling daily receipts and depositing funds into one of the hospital’s three bank accounts.”

Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Beasley said Michael, 41, kept cash receipts rather than deposit the money into the hospital’s bank account. Beasley said Michael also transferred funds from one bank account into another.

“In late 2008, the hospital began to experience cash flow problems and, upon further investigation, they began to suspect Michael was embezzling funds,” the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office wrote in a case summary.

Michael’s bank records revealed the former office manager deposited over $47,000 in cash into her own bank account.

“Individuals simply do not deposit large sums of cash anymore,” Beasley said.

“The vast majority of bank deposits today that are made by individuals are in the form of checks or through direct deposit.”

Michael faces a maximum of 40 years in prison when she is sentenced in October.

WHERE ARE ALL THE BLOGGERS of Henrico
Jan. 3, 2010, 11:59 AM

Guess when Mrs. Michael said what she did in the courtroom on Nov. 30th, that was enough to stop those bloggers who had a question whether she was innocent or guilty.  You see, it was not about anything but her actions.  She knew they were “morally wrong.”  She just got caught or she would still be doing the deed.  That is why our wonderful justice system works so good, the truth comes out and the criminals have to face the law.  Do people really think they aren’t going to get caught when they steal over a long, long period of time?  Get real people, it is a new year and if you are on the wrong track, get on the right track or you may be looking through bars too.

Your compassion and sympathy for Mrs. Michael is so understanding.  Your feelings for her are very touching and am sure she cherishes your friendship, thoughts and prayers.  You will be a wonderful source of support, care, understanding, and more when Mrs. Michael returns.  Maybe you can help her get her life back on track.  Everyone should be so lucky to have a friend like you!  As long as you care about what is right and wrong, you don’t need to worry about who else writes on this site.  Merry Christmas!

Let’s hope for many people’s sake, she will go on the straight and narrow.  Both sides have been hurt deeply and it will take years, if ever for those feelings to heal.  Crime just does not pay.

No Question Now of Henrico

Guess there is no question about whether she is guilty or innocent now.  Hopefully she will continue to go to a “pastor’s group” when she is in jail like Rev. Hughes testified to under oath.  10 years is a long time to be on probation for anyone.  Maybe this will give her and others incentive to keep their nose clean.  I hope she can turn her life around now.

Actually OMG, 2 spaces after a period is an archaic carryover from the days of typewriters where all typed letters took up the same amount space. The two spaces helped to differentiate where one sentence ended and another began. With today’s proportionally spaced typefaces, the two spaces are unnecessary, distracting and unattractive. The millions of single-spaced books, magazines and newspapers around you are evidence of this.

But in the end, do what makes you feel good and don’t criticize others for doing the same - it’s poor online etiquette.

I am sure that you, Stacey, of all people will be waiting with warm open loving arms to greet Robin when she comes out of prison.  Robin was attending church while she was stealing.  Didn’t seem to make a difference then.  When a law is broken, there are consequences for the criminal.  I am sure your friendship will last through thick and thin.

P.S.
Get a dictionary, learn to spell & 2 spaces go between the end of a sentence and the next sentence.
