Woman convicted of embezzling $77,000 from Elam Animal Hospital Published: August 20, 2009 By Michael Copley, Staff Writer A Powhatan woman was convicted August 10 of stealing nearly $77,000 from her former employer. Diane Michael worked as the office manager at Elam Animal Hospital from June 2004 until November 2008. Her duties, according to the Commonwealth, included “reconciling daily receipts and depositing funds into one of the hospital’s three bank accounts.” Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Beasley said Michael, 41, kept cash receipts rather than deposit the money into the hospital’s bank account. Beasley said Michael also transferred funds from one bank account into another. “In late 2008, the hospital began to experience cash flow problems and, upon further investigation, they began to suspect Michael was embezzling funds,” the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office wrote in a case summary. Michael’s bank records revealed the former office manager deposited over $47,000 in cash into her own bank account. “Individuals simply do not deposit large sums of cash anymore,” Beasley said. “The vast majority of bank deposits today that are made by individuals are in the form of checks or through direct deposit.” Michael faces a maximum of 40 years in prison when she is sentenced in October. |

My View of Henrico

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness does not include being betrayed. Betrayal is a hard thing to deal with. Lots of folks can preach, but unless you have experienced the hurt first hand, you really have no idea what you are talking about. No one is out for blood, just repayment and restitution. It would have been nice if she could have explained why she did it. Not even close to an explanation. If you were in the courtroom, you would know that she showed no emotions what so ever. How sincere does that look to those who know her. Her family has been betrayed as well. Maybe she will be a better person one day. Closure will be hard for all involved and our lives have been changed forever because of GREED. RE: Do You Think

Good Lord people. No one is making excuses for her taking the money. SHE HAS BEEN PUNISHED FOR WHAT SHE HAS DONE AND IS PAYING THEM BACK. She took their life? Wow, that’s dramatic, you think? She had a ball spending the money? You think?? How did she spend it? She is paying for what she did. I think the only way you blood seeking, miserable mongers would be satisfied is if she were to be executed for what she did. But come to think of it, that probably wouldn’t be enough either. You think? Do You Think of Henrico

Do you think the Elam’s would like to have their life back? Robin took their life from them. Do you think they might, just might like to have the $77,000 returned. You think? Do you think they wish this whole thing never happened? Robin is not the only one heartbroken here. She had a ball blowing the money and how much fun did the Elams have? Think about how much fun a person can have finding out the person that was trusted was a crook. Still no good reason why she took the money. Excuse after excuse. RE: How about this...

What an ignorant thing to say. First of all, Robin began paying restitution months ago. Now she is in jail and can’t pay. Secondly, do you think you people will EVER forgive or “clear” her even when the money has been paid back? It’s amazing that even with her sitting in jail, you all insist on keeping this going. Get a life. How about this of Henrico

How about all of you who feel so much for the criminal, pool your money and send the Elam’s the $77,000 + interest and all will be much easier to deal with. That would clear Robin and help the Elams. RE: Ashley

I want to say as respectfully as possible, that if you dont know details please dont attack, either side. As stated before, Robin has children who are capable of accessing the information bieng written here, trust me they have been through enough!! People deserve second chances and i do believe that she IS a good person that made bad decisions. All i can pray for is that her husband and children can be strong and that the Elam’s can recieve what has been taken and move on with their life as smoothly as possible. It hurts to read what the people in her community have to say about her and dont know her please just put yourself in the shoes of a friend of hers and dont bash the subject. Justice of Henrico

What happened to the principals that our founding fathers established this great country on? The values many of us hold steadfast to don’t seem to apply to some. Live your life as honest, decent people and you won’t have to face punishment. How simple is that concept? Hurting by stealing from other people is not supposed to be a thrill or a high. It is not a joy ride or a snow ball battle for honorable just people. It is wrong, very wrong. Re: Sarah

You are right…once a criminal and a cheat, always a criminal and a cheat. Takes two to make that bed. Maybe you have been inside a criminal’s mind and can offer some clue as to why they break the law. Sarah of Powhatan

Robin made her bed now she needs to lay in it and think about what she has done and ALL the people she has hurt including her family.I hope she thinks long and hard for the next 6 months of what she has done to ALL the families that she has hurt and broken.I hope one day she can face those people and actually truly tell them why she did what she did.Maybe this is what she needs time away from all those people and her family to relize what she had and did,why she did it.
