Woman convicted of embezzling $77,000 from Elam Animal Hospital Published: August 20, 2009 By Michael Copley, Staff Writer A Powhatan woman was convicted August 10 of stealing nearly $77,000 from her former employer. Diane Michael worked as the office manager at Elam Animal Hospital from June 2004 until November 2008. Her duties, according to the Commonwealth, included “reconciling daily receipts and depositing funds into one of the hospital’s three bank accounts.” Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Beasley said Michael, 41, kept cash receipts rather than deposit the money into the hospital’s bank account. Beasley said Michael also transferred funds from one bank account into another. “In late 2008, the hospital began to experience cash flow problems and, upon further investigation, they began to suspect Michael was embezzling funds,” the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office wrote in a case summary. Michael’s bank records revealed the former office manager deposited over $47,000 in cash into her own bank account. “Individuals simply do not deposit large sums of cash anymore,” Beasley said. “The vast majority of bank deposits today that are made by individuals are in the form of checks or through direct deposit.” Michael faces a maximum of 40 years in prison when she is sentenced in October. |

Once Again of Henrico

Here we go again feeling sorry for the criminal. Thank God for Judges!!! What about the victims? Do people who commit this kind of crime really think it is all going to be OK with the person they betrayed just at a snap of a finger? SHAME ON YOU!!! Did they leave their victims feeling warm and fuzzy??? Bet not! People don’t change like a light switch turning electricity on and off. If you do think so, then you are sadly mistaken. People can try and make a better life, but the first thing that has to be done is to right the wrong. After that, maybe society will have a different opinion. She spoke words of remorse but did not show any expression of sorrow, not even 1 tear - how sorrowful was that - certainly not very convincing. Greed, that is what drives the thief. Pure greed! No serious medical bills, no justification, just greed. In approximately 600 times she took money, she knew it was morally wrong, but just didn’t stop or admit what she was doing. Do you think maybe, just maybe 1 time out of 600 she would have tried to stop her behavior! From a convicted felon's standpoint of Powhatan, VA

How sad and pathetic of you to all judge someone like this!!!! I myself a 2x convicted felon (charged with forgery) TWICE ... YES, stealing OTHER people’s money! When standing in a court room before a judge who will determine your fate, do you really think at that point in time it would be the right time to turn and say something to a person you hurt and/or stole from? Do you think shedding tears was going to do anything? IF she were to have shed tears - you would all be calling her on that for “acting” like she was remorseful! Either way you all condemn her! I too was sentanced and spent time locked up for my crime. I paid my restitution IN FULL, got my life back on track, and even went as far as to have my civil rights reinstated and charges were expunged! I know Robin is strong enough to get her life back on track. She has a wonderful support system at church and her family will stand beside her and so do her friends! We ALL make mistakes in life ... ALL of us. Can we not be forgiven? I feel sorry for those of you who can not forgive! God will see Robin on her real judgement day (and me too) - and I bet he opens those doors and lets us through with open arms ...and says “I forgive you”. It's over

You people really are sick and milicious. The Sentencing of Henrico
Nov. 30, 2009, 06:00 PM
The sentence was 10 years probation. 18 months jail time with all but 6 months suspended. She had a stone face and did not shed a tear. She was still unable to make eye contact with the Elams or any member of their family. Obviously she has 6 long months to think about her actions. She does have to pay restitution plus interest. Her witnesses were “touching” but when all was said and done, she left with law enforcement, not her family or “friend”. He was waiting across the street. Anon of Powhatan, VA

Real distasteful. Don’t be a blooter. If you don’t know the facts, maybe you should be reading comic books. Stick to the case, and it doesn’t have anything to do with Mrs. Elam’s surgery, it has to do with the case and crime and stealing. Beside, Mrs. Elam is not on trial ROBIN MICHAEL is. Diversion is not becoming to you. Your creative writing has nothing to do with the article, how tacky can a desperate person get! Criminals Don't Care of Goochland

Did Mrs. Michael think about the reprocussions & embarrassment of her actions with regards to her family & friends over the last 4+ years? Maybe she should have thought about them then instead of playing the “poor pittyful me card.” What makes a criminal forget that they have other folks counting on them and by doing a crime, they will be disappointing others. I just don’t understand. Mrs. Michael can thank herself for all that is coming her way. She is the responsible one! Crime In General of Henrico

Has anyone noticed that the crime was a felony? If she had an ounce of sorrow for what she did, she sure has hidden it. Where is the accountability and responsibility for one’s actions. Why do people turn to dishonest behavior anyway? Was it something in their childhood? Adults know right from wrong. Why does a criminal think they can get away with what they do? Do they think they are entitled to steal, cheat, lie, wreck families, etc? Do they think because they live in the greatest country in the world, it is just there and they can take it? Amazing that Mrs. Michael didn’t want or intend to stop stealing from the Elams. She got caught and that is what made her stop. How sad is the empty soul that they would compromise their values to break the law? Maybe she felt entitled. I am sure she will be very dramatic and will probably be well reheresed. Maybe she can rebuild her life and become a better person. She should start by paying the $$$ + interst and maybe that would show her true concern and sorrow for her actions. Without that repayment, it is just hot air. Let’s hope she will improve, after all 2 bankruptsies and 4 judgements is not exactly what we would call a good track record. She hasn’t mended her ways so far, let’s hope she will start tomorrow. Get A Life

Wow! It seems Mrs. Michael made the right decision in taking the plea bargain in lieu of going to trial. How could she possibly have been given a fair trial by her “peers” when these postings show just how ignorant and biased her peers are? Attacking her family, implicating her husband, making assumptions about how this has affected people in her life, questioning her Christianity, and my favorite, suggesting she has a yard sale to pay back restitution, show just how narrow-minded and malicious you are and how this is about nothing more than revenge. What a bunch of idiots. This should be handled in a court of law and not in a newspaper or on-line where any narrow-minded, egotistical, spineless coward who likes to play judge and jury without knowing all the facts can post comments. You all assume you know who the victims in this situation are, pretend to care about her children, and then slander Robin and her husband. How hypocritical is that? Can you imagine how the children feel after reading your comments? They are living with this every day and don’t need any unnecessary hearsay thrown in their faces. As far as Mr. Micheal is concerned, he is a strong man who is standing by the woman he loves, and trying to protect his family. He is more of a man than most of you could aspire to be. Seems to be a lot of “the pot calling the kettle black” from the people of Powhatan. But I do agree with one thing, the Michaels should move away from Powhatan when this is over. If these postings are any indication of the type of people who live there, I would want to get as far away as possible. Submit Your Comments Below Commenting is not available in this weblog entry. |
