Powhatan’s E. Floyd Yates dies at 107 Ellwood Floyd (E. Floyd) Yates, a businessman, public servant and a fixture in the community in Powhatan for 83 years, died August 31 at the age of 107. Mr. Yates moved to Powhatan in 1927 and opened Yates Motor Company. He went on to start an oil company and a lumber business. He was on the board of supervisors during the Depression, the county’s draft board during World War II and he served as a substitute judge in the circuit court. First ‘Roundabout Thursday’ Event will be held tomorrow The Powhatan Farmers Market will debut tomorrow at 4 p.m. by the roundabout on Old Buckingham Rd., across from the County Administration building. FBI withdrew from shooting range due to opposition The FBI’s decision to pull out of a planned law-enforcement shooting range in Powhatan County stemmed chiefly from residents’ opposition, according to a letter sent by the FBI to Rep. J. Randy Forbes, R-4th. The project, being led by state police, is now under final review by the state’s Secretary of Administration Lisa Hicks-Thomas, with a decision expected in a matter of days. Mental evaluations ordered for man charged with attempted capital murder A Glen Allen resident charged in Powhatan with the attempted murder of a Virginia State Police officer will undergo evaluations to determine his competence and sanity. Neal Thomas Wooldridge, 41, is accused of trying to run over Trooper Otis Jackson during a police chase March 3. The chase started at about 2:30 p.m. when Wooldridge refused to pull over for a traffic stop on Route 288. Powhatan County’s Attorney to resign at end of the end of the year Powhatan County Attorney John Rick will resign at the end of this year “to concentrate on personal interests,” Carolyn Bishop, county administrator, announced today. “He is leaving us to work on other things he loves but has been unable to pursue,” Bishop wrote in an email. DEQ report finds no adverse effects from Powhatan shooting range The state’s Department of Environmental Quality and other agencies have no objections to a proposed law-enforcement shooting range in Powhatan County. But the DEQ’s review, filed Tuesday, does label the project “not routine” because of fierce opposition from Powhatan residents and county leaders, along with objections from across the James River in Goochland County. Men charged with sex crimes will be tried together A man charged with having sex with minors was ordered to remain in custody after a preliminary hearing in the case was continued on a motion from the Commonwealth. Tara Hatcher, an assistant commonwealth’s attorney in Powhatan who handles cases in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, said her motion was based on the desire to try codefendants William A Richardson and Orman E.
