Kornegay knows a thing or two about getting involved. On March 5, he was named the 2009 Volunteer Citizen of the Year by the Huguenot Ruritan Club. Kornegay was honored that night for his extensive work in the community, from serving as Commander and Past Commander of Powhatan’s American Legion Post 201, to his work with the local WWII… Read more... Published: Mar 17, 2010 Board of Supervisors Briefs Shared revenue being held for now In order to provide what supervisors called “wiggle room” to respond to a worst-case scenario in state funding, the board of supervisors voted March 4 to hold $776,000 in revenue shared between the county and schools in an undesignated reserve fund. Based on an already-established ratio used to divide shared revenue between the county and schools, the school system stands to receive 60 percent of the $700,000 sum — $466,000. Add to that the return of the now-requested $517,000 in surplus funds from last year, and the school… Read more... Published: Mar 17, 2010 VDOT briefs VDOT will try to wring $15 million from the maintenance budget of its Richmond District, which includes Powhatan and 13 other counties, by reducing services for non safety related items in order to achieve a balanced budget after snow removal efforts forced the department of transportation to burn through general maintenance funds. Residency engineer Dale Totten said in the Chesterfield Residency alone, money spent on snow removal- around $5.2 million- was almost twice what was budgeted for that purpose. He… Read more... Authorities identified the dead man as James J. Wolf Jr., a front-seat passenger in the car. About 10:40 p.m., Louisa sheriff’s deputy K.S. Miller spotted a car traveling 65 mph in a 45-mph zone just south of Mineral, according to the Sheriff’s Office. After the deputy activated his emergency lights and siren, the car sped up to more than 80 mph and ran off the right side of Pendleton Road… Read more... Published: Mar 14, 2010 Lawmakers approve two-year, $70 billion budget The 2010 General Assembly adjourned yesterday, one day later than scheduled, after speedy approval by weary lawmakers of a $70 billion-plus budget-balancing plan. The budget doesn’t raise taxes, prunes spending for education and health care, and erases a $4.2 billion shortfall with new fees and a giant cash grab from the public-employee pension. At 5:52 p.m., lawmakers headed home after a 61-day session during which the Democrat-dominated Virginia Senate, the Republican-controlled House of Delegates and new Gov. Bob McDonnell occasionally clashed over remedies to a fiscal crisis… Read more... Published: Mar 12, 2010 Powhatan school board formally requests return of surplus funds The back-and-forth budget process in Powhatan might be moving towards firmer ground, with the school board filing a formal request with the board of supervisors- a “good faith effort,” according to school board member Debbie M. Jones- to return more than $500,000 in surplus funds from last year. During a budget meeting March 4 where the board of supervisors (BOS) voted to hold school funding at just over $19 million, supervisors expressed concern that the needs assessment the school board approved and presented to the BOS was based, in part, on a $1 million increase… Read more... As important as common sense remains, Batterson had a good reason for relying so heavily on it back then: particularly in the early years of his career, it was pretty much all he had. Published: Mar 10, 2010 Powhatan’s Extension Office could close A House budget amendment may lead to the loss of Powhatan County’s Cooperative Extension office. The change calls for the closing of 13 Virginia Cooperative Extension Service offices, including Powhatan’s, and merging them with other nearby offices. For Powhatan extension agent Eric Bowen, news of the proposal came as a surprise. Bowen said he first learned of the possibility that the Powhatan office could be shut down on Feb. 21. Information since then has been hard to come by. … Read more... |
