It’s a great time of year to be outside, but several area horseback riders say they haven’t been able to take full advantage of the springtime weather.

Since April of last year, a portion of the trails inside the Powhatan Wildlife Management Area have been closed to horses.

According to Rick Busch, assistant director at the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF), the group that manages the area, there is only one trail – the “Dogwood” trail – that has been closed.

“Virtually all the trails that have always been open are still open,” Busch said.

Cooking 101: Capers
Published: May 16, 2012

By Michael Hastings

Good cooks always have secret weapons to liven up dull dishes.

It may be mustard to spruce up a salad dressing or lemon juice to brighten a bowl of soup.

A favorite weapon in my arsenal has always been capers, a piquant flower bud of a Mediterranean bush.

Capers are what I think of as the condiment’s condiment. They often add flavor to sauces, mayonnaises and dressings. They boast a pungency that is hard to pin down, but they always improve the flavors of the other ingredients.
Their unusual flavor is hard to describe. For me, it’s like rosemary with a punch.

The caper comes from the Capparis spinosa, a low, prickly bush that is native to the Mediterranean… Read more...

Media General News Service

I offer this column as a public service and direct it to all men everywhere who are staring Mother’s Day in the face and worry that you’re going to blow it.

Whoops. Let’s start from the beginning. Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13, if you haven’t seen a Hallmark commercial yet. That is the day that mothers everywhere and, however old they are, want to be recognized and honored for their service in behalf of their children, whether they admit it or not.

Meals cooked, interminable hours in doctors’ waiting rooms, laundry, chauffeuring, kissing of boo-boos, cleaning up whatever can come out of a child’s body, signing permission slips, phone calls… Read more...

Residents on alert after rabid skunk attacks area dog
Published: May 09, 2012

On the afternoon of April 30, a Powhatan woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, had just put her youngest child down for a nap when she received a somewhat unusual text message from a neighbor.

The text read that there was a very strange-acting skunk wandering toward her house, which is located in a subdivision in the vicinity of Lake Randolph and Quarter Mill in southern Powhatan.

Because the woman has an outside dog she went out to try and bring him indoors – but was a hair too late. The skunk had already charged under the deck, the dog’s usual hangout, and chased the dog out the other side. When the dog snapped at the skunk, the skunk sprayed him.

But the… Read more...

To market, to market ...
Published: May 02, 2012

The Powhatan Farmers Market will return to the Village this week, once again bringing with it bushels of local produce, crafts and live entertainment.

The community gathering, which kicks off tomorrow from 4-7 p.m. at the Village Roundabout in front of the County Administration Building, will also feature a kids market this year in addition to the activities and games county children enjoyed in the market’s inaugural 2011 season.

Admittedly, last year’s market, which was voted one of America’s Top Farmer’s Markets by American Farmland Trust, will be a tough act to follow. But volunteer Clara Stokes says this year’s lineup up of vendors and entertainers… Read more...

By Roslyn Ryan

After several months of worrying whether or not they would be able to keep their jobs, many county employees are likely breathing a little easier this week.

In an e-mail sent out last week by Interim County Administrator Elmer Hodge, employees were told that all county employees who will be laid off have been notified, and that no further staff reductions will be needed.

“The Board and I want you to know that it will not be necessary to have any more staff reductions,” wrote Hodge.  “With the layoffs that have already taken place and those employees who have chosen to take Early Retirement, we have reached the amount needed to balance the FY 2013 budget. … Read more...
