If you wish to vote in Virginia’s Republican presidential primary to be held March 6 and are not registered to vote, the last day to do so is Monday, February 13, said Powhatan County Registrar Inez Poe. There will be two candidates on the ballot – former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and Ron Paul, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas’s 14th District. Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, who won last week’s primary in South Carolina, did not gather enough signatures to appear on Virginia’s ballot. Both Romney and Paul have sought the Republican nomination in the past. Romney won several primaries and caucuses in the… Read more...

By 2:45 last Saturday, there were few parking spaces to be found in the lot at Powhatan Community Church. Despite bitter temperatures and an unrelenting icy drizzle outside, residents continued filing into the church, filling row upon row. They were there to honor former Powhatan County Supervisor Bob Cosby, and honor him they did. Among those in attendance were family members and close friends, as well as a Senator, a Delegate, and the entire choir of Little Zion Baptist church. Former and current county supervisors praised him for his dedicated service and a parade of young children regaled him with poems and songs. Governor Bob McDonnell sent his congratulations via a taped video message,… Read more...

The Powhatan County of Board of Supervisors held a two-day budget and CIP retreat on Wednesday and Thursday of last week to discuss Powhatan’s financial future in fiscal year 2013. Finance Director and Acting County Administrator Jerry Whitaker said that the county will be starting the year with an estimated budget gap between $2.83 million and $6.44 million – the lower figure reflecting the gap if a neutralized real estate tax is applied, and the higher figure reflecting the gap if no neutralized tax rate is applied. Whitaker said that he expects the recent real estate assessments – which are the primary reason for the budget deficit – not to deviate more… Read more...

* This story has been amended to reflect a change in location. Both Monday and Tuesday’s meetings will be held at the Powhatan County Administration Building in the Large Conference Room. As the search for Powhatan’s next county administrator continued last week, the committee charged with the task of finding qualified candidates was working to figure out its own next steps. According to District 5 Supervisor Carson Tucker, the group still had to discuss “how wide to throw the net” in a search for candidates, as well as “the matrices we are going to use” to whittle down the list of applicants. Perhaps as important as anything, “we… Read more...

Have a hankering for a latte, an espresso or a café Americano? Now you can get one without leaving Powhatan. Last week husband-and-wife-team Jennifer and James Roberts opened Courthouse Coffee & Creamery, in the space last occupied by Two Fellas. In addition to espresso and coffee drinks, the shop also serves Hersey’s ice cream and a small assortment of pastries. Jennifer said she’d wanted to open a coffee shop in Powhatan for about a decade and when she saw a space available across from the County Administration building and smack dab in the middle of the Village, she figured it was the perfect location. Growing up in Southeast Alaska,… Read more...

When husband and wife team John and Sue Pass started the gospel band Just Us four years ago, it was just the two of them, singing and playing guitar in their church. The band has since grown to nine members and meets every Friday night at the Pass household for dinner and a practice session in the Pass’s garage. They’ve played at churches and other locations around Powhatan and throughout the state. Later this month Just Us will be recording their first album at the Slipped Disc studio in Ashland. Powhatan Today reporter Emily Darrell dropped in one recent Friday night to chat with the band. This question is for John and Sue. What made you decide to start Just Us? … Read more...

For Powhatan’s newly elected board of supervisors, one small typographical error has added up to a lot of confusion—and about three-quarters of a million dollars. During a special workshop last night, board members turned their attention to a reported discrepancy between the preliminary property assessment figures given to the county by Pearson Appraisals on Nov. 14 and the final numbers handed in on Dec. 28. Due to what Powhatan Commissioner of the Revenue Jamie Timberlake explained was a data entry error by the firm handling the assessments—most likely an extra zero tacked on a number—the first projections offered a “$77 million difference on the… Read more...

During a special workshop held at the Powhatan Library this evening, county supervisors voted to create a search committee to identify potential candidates to serve as interim county administrator as well as a search firm to find a permanent administrator. The five board members were all in agreement over the fact that District 1’s David Williams and District 5’s Carson Tucker would serve on the committee, but struggled to reach a consensus on whether that committee would include a member of the community, a suggestion made by District 4 Supervisor Billy Melton. Williams spoke out against having a citizen representative, saying it was not necessary and could potentially… Read more...
