Bomb scare at PHS a false alarm

Powhatan High School students were evacuated to the gymnasium and auditorium Tuesday morning, following a bomb threat at the school.

The State Police and Sheriff’s deputies were already in the school after being notified of an earlier threat. Despite determining that there was no threat to students from that incident, they decided to search the school as a precautionary measure. According to a statement release by the State Police, two dogs responded to one bag, causing concern. Ultimately, the bag was found to be free of any illegal materials.

High winds make tough work for Powhatan fire crews

Powhatan firefighters had their hands full Sunday, as crews worked to battle fires made worse by winds that, at times, approached tropical storm force.

According to Powhatan Fire Chief Pat Schoeffel, Powhatan crews responded to over 25 calls between the hours of 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday. Firefighters were also dispatched to help deal with fires in other counties.

After assisting Amelia crews with a church fire early in the day, Powhatan firefighters were quickly swamped with calls of their own.

Supervisors will meet tonight to discuss Community Action program

The Powhatan County Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting today at 4 p.m. to discuss a number of issues relating to the Richmond Community Action Program, formerly the Powhatan Goochland Community Action Agency. This special meeting, which will be held in the Powhatan Library’s large conference room, is authorized by section 115.2 - 1417 of the Code of Virginia. Paul Grossman and Tom Wagstaff of RCAP will be present to provide information and answer questions from the Board of Supervisors regarding the current status of Community Action services.

Three Planners favor proposed kennel

On Feb. 5, The Powhatan Planning Commission voted 3-2 in favor of a planned dog kennel near the intersection of Bell Road and Powhatan Lakes Road.

The issue before the Commission was whether or not to approve a conditional use permit to allow Howard McKoy of 4709 Bell Road to open a private kennel on his property.

The case had come up during the January meeting but had been deferred until Feb. 5 in order to assess the impact the facility would have on other residents of the neighborhood, which is currently zoned for community residential use.

Man arrested on child pornography charges following library incident

A Powhatan man was arrested Feb. 5 after allegedly using a computer at the Powhatan Library to view pornographic images of children.

Raymond Gibson, 47, of Judes Ferry Road, was taken into custody and is currently out on bond awaiting a March 12 court appearance.

A subsequent investigation of Gibson’s home turned up more items, leading to his arrest on eight counts of child pornography.

According to Detective Kevin Wolfe of the Powhatan Sheriff’s Department, Gibson was caught during a surveillance operation set up by police.

Growing pains

For Billy Sifers, the owner and operator of one of Powhatan County’s only two remaining grain farms, the cars were the first sign of trouble.

Thirty years go, he said, he used to see five or six vehicles pass by during the hour it took him to cut his front field, which sits right off the road. Now, after the completion of the 711 and 288 interchange just a few miles away, he can easily count 20 times that many.

Sifers, a one-man operation, currently grows corn, soybeans, wheat and barley. He had a small cow and calf operation until two years ago, he said, but gave it up when the traffic got so bad that he couldn’t get his equipment across the road to feed the animals… Read more...



Feb. 23 event will benefit motorcycle accident victim

Friends of Mike Durkin, a Powhatan resident severely injured in a recent motorcycle accident, will be holding a benefit on Feb. 23 to help offset the medical bills his family is now facing.

The event, featuring live music from Against the Grain, food and a silent auction, will be held at the Powhatan Moose Lodge from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Single tickets are $10 and advanced tickets for couples are $15. Couples tickets at the door will be $20.

Those staging the event are hoping they will be able to bring a measure of comfort to Durkin and his wife, who were in the process of moving to Florida when the accident occurred.

Paving the way, her way

As an employee of the Powhatan County School system for over 40 years, Burnette Turner has received a certain degree of recognition over the course of her career.

The award she received recently, however, may be the closest to her heart.

Turner, a bookkeeper for Powhatan Elementary School, was selected by Mount Zion Baptist church in Powhatan last January as an African American who had paved the way for generations to come.

“I felt quite honored,” said Turner, noting that she had never been recognized for anything outside of her work with the school system. She received a plaque in honor of her selection, and was recognized during the church’s celebration… Read more...




Route 13 home lost to fire

On Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 8 p.m., Powhatan Fire Companies 3, 5, 1 were dispatched to a reported house fire in the 5500 block of Old Buckingham Road. Engine 3 arrived to find a two story house with heavy fire in the rear on the first and second floors. Volunteer firefighters mounted an aggressive interior attack stretching several hose lines into the house to knock down the fire. Engine 5 set up a fill site at a dry hydrant on Old Buckingham Road and tankers hauled water from there to the fire. Firefighters remained on the scene for about two and a half hours extinguishing hot spots and assisting the state investigator. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.… Read more...
