Cat’s tale too good to be true?

Former Powhatan resident Paula Vasquez describes herself as “not really a cat person.” She doesn’t like the mess and hassle that come with keeping an indoor cat, and she can’t stand the smell of a litter box. So when her husband’s job caused the family to relocate to Northern Virginia last summer, Vasquez decided to leave their 8-year-old calico, ReeCee, at her mother’s 100-acre farm in Cumberland. Vasquez said she thought the cat would be happier there and “we could still see her when we came down to visit.” For awhile the arrangement worked out. “She’d eat on the porch, then go play in the woods and then… Read more...
All hail the Queen

For Powhatan resident—and reigning County Fair Your Highness Queen—Frances Adams, being a senior means staying busy
Perhaps the best way to understand Powhatan resident Frances Norton Adams is to look at one of her favorite quotes, attributed to Martin Buxbaum: “Some people, no matter how old they get, never lose their beauty—they merely move it from their faces into their hearts.” Adams, 81, who was crowned Powhatan County Fair’s Your Highness Queen last summer, says there really is no “secret” to enjoying health and vitality long into the Golden years. Exercise and healthy eating are paramount, she says, complemented by plenty of social interaction and volunteer work. To that end, Adams stays busy volunteering at the Women’s Club Clothes Closet, ministering… Read more...

Editor’s note: The following statement was sent to Powhatan Today from District 2 Supervisor Jason Moore, concerning the recent resignation of Powhatan County Administrator Carolyn Bishop Tonight the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors accepted the resignation of Mrs. Carolyn Bishop. The resignation was tendered last Thursday. The Board and Mrs. Bishop came to the conclusion that a new direction was needed and negotiated amendments to her employment contract which proved beneficial to all parties. When all was said and done, the five Powhatan county leaders seated on the dais said very little. In a 3-2 vote, during the first Board of Supervisors meeting of 2012, board members accepted the resignation of Powhatan County Administrator Carolyn Bishop. But there was no mention of Bishop during the supervisors’ comment period, save for a reference by newly elected Board Chairman Barry Hodge to the fact that the issue was a personnel matter and could not be commented on publicly. The hundreds of Powhatan residents in attendance, however, weren’t nearly so reticent. Calling the board’s move to force Bishop out of office “disgraceful” and without… Read more...
Residents turn up at BOS workshop to show support for County Administrator

By 6:30 on Thursday evening all seats in the Powhatan Public Library’s large meeting room were taken and people were gathering in the hall, awaiting the meeting that was to start at 7. When the parking lot filled up, people parked across the street at the YMCA and walked over. If this seems like an unusually large turnout for a Board of Supervisors workshop, it was. Many were in attendance in support of County Administrator Carolyn Bishop, who – if a series of leaked emails can be trusted –will likely be fired at Monday night’s Board meeting. Board of Supervisors’ workshops don’t generally allow for citizen input, but when a 30-minute… Read more...

or most Powhatan kids, chasing away hunger pangs on a lazy Saturday is as simple as opening the fridge. For children in families struggling to make ends meet, however, it can be a very different story. According to Powhatan School officials, hunger is a very real issue among the student populations of the county’s elementary schools. Dozens of children in the county, they say, have had the experience of leaving school on Friday afternoon and not being able to eat again until they return to school Monday morning. To Bobby and Brenda Fulcher, owners of Aerations Plus, this is simply unacceptable. Together with a group of concerned residents, the Fulchers have started a program… Read more...

When it was revealed last week that one current and two soon-to-be supervisors had asked for the resignation of County Administrator Carolyn Bishop, reaction from the community was swift. Many who posted on Powhatan Today’s website questioned both the timing of the request — since two of the three men involved, David Williams and Barry Hodge, had not officially taken office yet—and the reason for dismissing Bishop, who has worked for the county since 1999. District 2 Supervisor Jason Moore, the third official involved in asking for Bishop’s resignation, says he was not surprised by the reaction but was concerned by the direction the discussion eventually… Read more...

Following the recommendation of Powhatan’s planning department, the Midlothian-based architecture firm Balzer and Associates has requested an “indefinite deferral” of its plans for a complex of 220 apartments and 38 townhomes to be located at the intersection of Stavemill Road and Route 60. In a letter submitted to planning director, Brandon Stidham, S. Beaumont Juvenile Correction Center, located in northern Powhatan County, has ended its search for a new superintendent. The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice chose Charles Dockery to replace Michael Ito, who resigned in September after serving six years in the role. It is unknown whether Ito’s resignation was forced or voluntary. Dockery had served as interim superintendent since Ito’s resignation, and, according to VDJJ spokesperson Robin Farmer, has worked in Virginia’s juvenile justice system for more than 31 years. Dockery officially became the new superintendent on Christmas Day. Beaumont Correctional Center, located off… Read more...
