As a long-time county registrar, Powhatan’s Inez Poe has seen many changes come down the pike. Over the course of her forty years on the job, she’s seen the county population soar and districts change. She’s seen ballots go from paper to touch screens and back to paper. Now, however, it’s Poe who’s making the change. On May 30, just a few months after becoming Virginia’s longest serving registrar, Poe will officially retire. “It’s been a wonderful 40 years,” she said last week, adding that she has been fortunate to serve under many wonderful county leaders. Though Poe will still be in the office for a few hours… Read more...

Amelia does it. Louisa does it. Chesterfield does it. According to the website of James City County, nearly 80 percent of Virginians live in localities that do it. And starting sometime this summer or fall – the actual date has yet to be nailed down – Powhatan will join the ranks of the 40-plus Virginia cities, towns, and counties that charge for ambulance transport. Over the last decade or so, this practice – often referred to as “soft billing” – has been adopted by localities across the nation, spreading especially quickly in the years since the economic downtown, as local governments have begun to see dwindling revenues and decreased… Read more...

When it comes to the upcoming Straight Talk for Families seminar, scheduled for March 31 at Pocahontas Elementary School, organizer Mary Harrison wants to make one thing crystal clear. Though the program is intended, in part, to help students understand the risks of premarital sex, “This is not ‘The Talk’,” Harrison insists. “[Teaching kids about sex] is the area of responsibility of the parents,” she said. The workshop is instead meant to help both parents and teens make the most informed decisions possible concerning their health and their futures. In addition to group discussions on topics ranging from healthy relationships to… Read more...

A fund was set up in her honor, and Anderson’s colleagues and students began trying to come up with a way to help Anderson begin to put her life back together. Now, as Anderson continues to recover from her injuries, the Powhatan Fair Association has partnered with the Powhatan High School Interact Club to host the Mary on the Mend benefit. The event will be held on March 24, from noon-4 p.m. and will feature music, food and plenty of games and activities, with all of the proceeds going to the Mary Anderson Fund. According to organizers, the event grew… Read more...

Call it a sign of the times. Only months after Powhatan got its first-ever pawn shop, the County now has another place to exchange goods for quick cash: AAA Cash for Assets, located on Dorset Circle Ridge across from Dixon’s Auctions. The shop officially opened around a month ago, after owner Doug Stewart, a Chesterfield resident, got the necessary permits required by the Sheriff’s Department. Stewart, who also owns ABC Cash for Assets in Chesapeake, said he buys “a little bit of everything.” Gold, silver, diamonds, foreign and domestic coins, electronics, artwork – “If it has value to it, I’ll buy it,” Stewart said.… Read more...

If you see your pre-teen child typing on the computer, “hang on mom’s OTS”, it means you’re standing over her shoulder. Should you be? Holly Wagner thinks so. The stay-at-home mom allows 12-year-old daughter Katie to use Facebook but monitors everything she does – down to posting pictures for her. “I think it is safe enough because she has to use the computer in the living room and I have her password,” Wagner said. For those parents who aren’t always there, a host of social networking sites catering to children – as well as monitoring groups that rate them – are popping up on the Internet. They… Read more...

Interim County Administrator Elmer Hodge met with the Library Board of Trustees last week to discuss the 2013 budget. The bottom line: The Powhatan library needs to reduce its budget by five percent. Library Director Peggy Martin said that to accomplish this the library will almost certainly have to reduce its hours, and will likely have to cut some of its programs as well, such as ones targeted at seniors and children. The library is currently open 54 hours a week and Martin said she’s looked into many different hour-reduction scenarios, such as closing on a certain day of the week – say, Wednesday – or reducing the hours each day by opening later or closing earlier.… Read more...

When Edgar Merchant, a sawmill owner, and his brother-in-law, Ellery Davis, decided to open a tractor supply company in Powhatan shortly after WWII , the county had fewer than 6,000 residents and the name of the game was farming. Sixty-some years later the county population is nearly 30,000, more than 60 percent of the labor force commutes to work outside of the county, and most of the remaining farms are run by retirees or hobbyists. Yet Davis-Merchant Equipment Company, which is holding an open house on Saturday, March 24 to celebrate its 60th year as an incorporated business, has weathered those changes, becoming one the county’s longest running operations. The preliminary hearing for James Lee Wolfe, which was to be held in Powhatan General District Court on Friday, has been continued until May 4. Wolfe has been arraigned for allegedly robbing, abducting, and brutally attacking Powhatan special education teacher Mary Anderson one evening in late January, as she was watching television in her Academy Road home. Wolfe has also been charged with setting Anderson’s home on fire. The hearing was continued because Wolfe’s defense attorney, Mark Englisby, has requested a psychological evaluation to be performed on Wolfe, which won’t be completed until mid-April. Powhatan Commonwealth’s Attorney Bob Beasley,… Read more...
