Powhatan County Transfer Station You can contact the Powhatan County Transfer Station at 598-5673. It is located on 2407 Mitchell Road.Since 1986, when Powhatan County closed its landfill, it has operated a transfer station on Mitchell Road, just off of Anderson Highway. County residents may dispose of household trash and are allowed to recycle certain items (see list below). In 1990, Powhatan joined the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA), a public service authority which includes 13 jurisdictions in Central Virginia. CVWMA works to plan and implement regional solutions to the common problem arising from solid waste management. One area CVWMA is involved in is recycling. In 1989, the Virginia General Assembly passed a law requiring local governments to recycle 25 percent. That goal was mer through County and CVWMA cooperation. CVWMA also provides recycling bins at the transfer station. Powhatan county residents recycled 203 tons in 2003. All Powhatan residents who display a valid county decal can drop off household waste at no charge. All other waste is subject to a fee. Items accepted in the Powhatan recycling program include: Newspapers and inserts: No string. brown bags are accepted. Mixed Papers: Flatten corrugated boxes, "junk mail", envelopes, cereal boxes, dry food boxes, catalogues, magazines, telephone books, and any tear-able paper product or container. No plastic bags. Glass: Rinsed Brown, green and clear glass, with the bands and lids removed. labels can remain on the bottles and jars. NO plastic bags. Bimetal: Aluminum cans, metal food cans, foil, foil containers. Rinse and crush. Labels do not need to be removed. Plastics: Type 1 and Type 2 plastics are now being recycled in Powhatan. rinse, check recycle triangle on container for type. Metal: A fee of $20 is charged to remove freon in disposed refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners. A $15 fee is charged for stoves, washing machines, water heaters and metal. No auto gas tanks, no large metal car parts. Antifreeze, Oil and Oil Filters: Oil and antifreeze should be clean of debris such as grass and dirt particles and go into separate drums. Filters should be put into the bin by themselves. No cardboard boxes or carrying containers are accepted. these should be disposed of in the trash bin. Tires: All tires are accepted. A nominal fee is charged for collection, depending on tire size. Batteries: All rechargeable batteries are recyclable (i.e. power tools, cordless and cellular phones, laptop computers, camcorders, cameras, two-way radios, etc.) Hours of operation for the transfer station are Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m.--5 p.m., Sunday 8 a.m.--5 p.m. year round.
