Janay Imani Green
Ms. Janay Imani Green, of Powhatan, Va. departed this life Sunday, September 25, 2011. She is survived by her mother, Victoria Spence of Powhatan; father, Mark E. Green of Teaneck, N.J.; maternal grandmother, Millicent L. Spence of Powhatan; paternal grandparents, Ethel and Elbert Green of Westwood N.J.; three aunts, Debra L. Spence of Powhatan, Elaine Spence Hobson (Mark) of Powhatan and Lori Green Crudup (David) of Westwood, N.J.; a host of aunts and uncles, cousins, relatives and friends. A memorial service was held Saturday, October 1, 2011 at the Robert Mealy Funeral Home, 2530 Dogtown Rd., Goochland, Va. Dr. Delmar Wright, eulogist.
Mark S. Cosner
Mark S. Cosner, 28, of Powhatan, died October 7, 2011. He is survived by one son, Brennan Cosner; his parents, Steve and Martha Cosner of Powhatan; maternal grandparents, Charles and June Brown of Powhatan; paternal grandparents, Ed and Shirley Moring of Richmond; one sister, Dawn Welch (Jamie) of Powhatan; two brothers, Adam Cosner of Chesterfield and Jarrett Cosner of Powhatan. The family will receive friends Monday (tonight) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy.(Rt.60), Powhatan. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Old Powhatan Baptist Church, 2202 Old Church Rd., Powhatan. Interment Powhatan Community Cemetery.
John W. Cutler
John (Jack) W. Cutler, Lt Col, USAF (retired), age 78, son of the late William L. and Ruby F. Cutler of Temperanceville, Virginia went to be with the Lord on September 30, 2011.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Sue; two daughters, Sue Ellen Hresan (Mark) and Nancy C. Bennett, both of Powhatan, Virginia; a son, John W.(Will) Cutler Jr. (Betsy) of Midlothian, Virginia; six grandchildren, Hope Johnson of Richmond, Virginia, Beth B. Weaver (Stephen) of North East, Maryland, Sarah and Charlie Bennett, both of Powhatan, Virginia, Clark and Christopher Cutler, both of Midlothian, Virginia and one great grand daughter Zoe Gauldin of Chester, Virginia.
Jack received his BA and MEd degrees from The University of Virginia and pursued postgraduate professional work there and at VPI & SU.
After serving on active duty with the USAF he was employed by the CIA and the American Oil Company. He taught in the Accomack County School system in Virginia and then was among the first to establish Southside Virginia Community College in Keysville, Virginia. While there, Jack worked as a Counselor and later became the Director of Continuing Education. Later, he was employed by the Department of Defense in Richmond, Virginia until his retirement.
Jack was a member of Huguenot Road United Methodist Church, Richmond, Virginia, Black Heath Daylight Masonic Lodge #1982, and a Shriner.

Wesley R. “Buddy” Wilson, 73, of Powhatan, died April 25, 2012. He is survived by his wife, June F. Wilson; daughter, Trish W. Lipscomb (Todd) of Powhatan; stepdaughter, Vanessa Snead (Lee) of Chesterfield; brother, Herbert Wilson; sisters, Judy Fuller, Alice DeGraff, Rosamond Ederton; and three stepgrandchildren.
The family received friends Saturday in the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, where services were held Monday, 11 a.m. Interment Powhatan Community Cemetery.

Walter Franklin “Buddy” Harris
Walter Franklin “Buddy,” Harris, 87, went home to his Savior, The Lord Jesus, on April 14, 2012. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Strong Harris. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 55 years, Margaret Borkey Harris. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific and the Philippine Islands; he received both a Bronze Star and a Silver Star for meritorious and courageous action. Following the war, he returned home to work for Brooks Transfer and Storage as a parts manager. During his working career, he was also employed by Hemingway Transport and by Peatross Manufacturing. He is also survived by his three children, Betty Ayers (Michael), Debbie Bergamo (James) and Frank Harris (Betsy). His grandchildren include Michael Pickels (Julie), Suzanne Britt (Adam), Michael Bergamo, Lauren Harris and Thomas Harris; his great-grandchildren include Allison and Caroline Pickels and Caroline and Charlotte Britt. Additionally, he is survived by stepchildren, Deborah Whitley (Mike), their children, Mike and Wendy; and June Rice (Tim) and their children, Zack and Kyle. A memorial service was held at First Baptist Church, Ashland, on Friday, April 20, 2012, and a reception followed at the church. Ruby L. Hypes
Ruby L. Hypes, 74, went to be with God on April 18, 2012. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mintie and Ernest Wright; husband, Leroy Hypes; seven sisters, and three brothers. She is survived by her son, Bobby Hypes; daughter, Sharon Moran and husband, Larry; two brothers, Marshall and Larry Wright; granddaughters, Sarah Solomon and husband, Chad, Megan Simmons and husband, Steven; great-grandchildren, KK, Mikey and Noah; and many nieces and nephews. Family received friends at the home of Sharon and Larry on Sunday, April 22, for a celebration of her life. Samuel M. Nelson
Samuel M. Nelson, 98, of Southerland Place Midlothian, passed away April 17, 2012. He was predeceased by his wife, Martha D. Nelson. He is survived by his daughter, Samantha N. Nuckols and her husband Michael; brothers Robert Nelson (Hazel) and Charles Nelson (Glenda); and numerous nieces and nephews. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude for the compassion and care shown to Mr. Nelson by the staff at Southerland Place, by the fifth floor staff of St. Francis Hospital, and by the Odyssey hospice team.

Viola Marie Brunelli
Viola Marie Brunelli, of Midlothian, VA, passed away on March 8, 2012. Born January 28, 1929, she was the daughter of Andrew and Katarina Mihalek. She is survived by her children: Gary Brunelli (JoAnn) of Midlothian, VA; Bill Brunelli (Susan) of Newport, VT; Tim Brunelli (Donna) of Friedens, PA; Linda Roush of Powhatan, VA; Tom Brunelli (Mary Beth) of Powhatan, VA; her sister Ann Kouvolo of Freedom, PA; twelve grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
A graduate of the Martins Ferry Hospital School of Nursing, Martins Ferry, OH, she pursued a career in nursing for twenty-eight years after which she became nationally certified as a poison specialist. She retired from the UVA Health System Poison Center. Her hobbies included reading and music. A private memorial service was held on Saturday.
Mrs. Frances Louise Jasper Funn
Mrs. Frances Louise Jasper Funn, of Powhatan, widow of the late Milton C. Funn Sr., passed away March 4, 2012. She is survived by her son, Aubrey Lee Funn (Pinky); four daughters, Jerretta Hatcher, Geraldine Woodson (Randolph), Fannie Snead (Andrew D.), Shirley Graves (Samuel); grandchildren, great- grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. The family received friends last Friday at Mealy Funeral Home in Goochland, Va. Services were held at First Antioch Baptist Church in Powhatan on Saturday, March 10. Eulogist, Rev. Vera Rhyne. Interment in the church cemetery.
Dorothy Elizabeth Click Younce
Dorothy Elizabeth Click Younce, 87, of Powhatan, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully with her family by her side March 6, 2012. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, E. Gray Younce. She is survived by one son, Larry Gray Younce (Vickie); two daughters, Susan Freeman Younce and Karen Younce Bradbury (Todd); three grandchildren, Larry Gray Younce II (Bobbie), Elizabeth Graham Bradbury, Douglas Gray Bradbury; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Gray Younce and Heather Ann Davis; a great-great-granddaughter, Bridgette Nicole Davis, all of Powhatan; two sisters, Evelyn Click Baer of Washington and Lucille Click Smith (Thomas) of Glen Allen; two brothers, Gary Philip Click of South Dakota and Wayne Eugene Click (Helen) of Powhatan; sister-in-law, Margaret Younce Ross of Charlottesville; and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy, better known to those who loved her, as “Mama Dot” was a member of Graceland Baptist Church for more than 60 years, where she was a member of the Women’s Missionary Organization and the Beulah Sunday School class. Dorothy was an active member of the Powhatan Extension Service and served on the board for many years. She also participated as a volunteer through that group at McGuire Veteran’s Hospital. The family received friends at Bennett & Barden Funeral Home in Powhatan, where services were held. Interment at Graceland Baptist Church Cemetery. Margaret Arnette Coffey
Mrs. Margaret Arnette Coffey, age 97, of Midlothian, widow of Sidney Norben Coffey, passed away January 14, 2012. She is survived by daughter, Ann Coffey Brackett, and her husband, Edward Brackett; daughters—in-law, Deanna Coffey Lipscomb and Sonya Lindsey Coffey; along with nine grandchildren, 17 great—grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren, preceded in death by sons, Herman Coffey and Alvin Coffey; and great-grandson, Sidney M. Samuel.
Margaret loved her family and enjoyed preparing big meals, tending flowers, and taking care of others. Margaret’s last years were made richer by everyone who helped her celebrate and embrace her faith, both at Bethlehem and Ginter Hall. Margaret was a dedicated lifelong member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Midlothian Turnpike, Richmond. The family received friends at Bliley’s-Chippenham. Funeral services were be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Interment followed in church cemetery.

Stephen D. Jones, 65, of Powhatan, Va., formerly of Pine Forge, Pa., died January 1, 2012. He is survived by his wife, Linda L. Jones; daughters, Amy L. Lacks (Chris), of Midlothian, Va., Ann L. Hollenbach (James), of New Jersey; mother, Mary E. Jones, of Missouri; brother, David C. Jones, of Missouri; four grandchildren, Joshua, Jason, Mia and Quinn. Robert Joseph Kerner
The Reverend Father Robert Joseph Kerner, age 70, of Powhatan, Va., died January 11, 2012. Fr. Bob is survived by his wife of 31 years, The Rev. Sandra Barbary Kerner; his sister, Jane Kerner; his brother-in-law, John Barbary (Susan); nieces, nephews, their children and grandchildren. Fr. Bob, a U.S. Navy veteran, served as Roman Catholic priest for nine years in the Diocese of Erie (Pa.). He was received as a priest in The Episcopal Church in 1990 and has served parishes in the Dioceses of Florida, Georgia, and Southern Virginia, retiring in 2010.
Visiting hours at Bennett & Barden Funeral Home were held Saturday, January 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. His Mass of the Resurrection was held at St. Matthias Epsicopal Church in . Midlothian on Sunday, January 15.
An overnight vigil was kept following the service, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Huguenot Trail in Powhatan and the committal was held in the St. Luke’s Church graveyard on Monday, January 16, 2012. Fay Spiller
Fay Spiller, 86, of Midlothian, passed away January 12, 2012. She was preceded in death by her parents Irma Fay and Guy McSwain, and her companion Frank Cobb.
She is survived by her sons, Mark Spiller and his wife Shelly and Guy Spiller, both of Powhatan, grandchildren, Leah and Sean, brother Arlan McSwain and his wife Carol, grandchildren Sean and Leah, two step grandchildren Derek and Kelsey Starr, a niece April and nephews, Mike and Guy.
She was a volunteer at Johnston Willis Hospital for over 20 years. In her earlier years she was a professional ballerina. She loved to dance and listen to big band music, and had a great artistic flair for design. Many thanks to all her caregivers at Morningside of Bellgrade.

Floyd E. Webb
Floyd E. Webb, 82, of Powhatan, died January 8, 2012. He is survived by two cousins, Vernelle Holland of California, James Simpson of Powhatan and many other second cousins. The family received friends in the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home.

Ronald Allen Frazier
Ronald Allen Frazier, 71, of Powhatan, died November 15, 2011. He left behind his wife, Susan; sister, Barbara Huff (Tommy); sons, Scott, Chris (Betsy) and Vince Frazier; and one granddaughter, Christi-Anne. He lived life his way and was a superb artist and craftsman, member of the Knifemaker’s guild with work in collections all over the world. He left his mark to be enjoyed for years to come, a great testiment to an extraordinary life. Many thanks to the Powhatan Rescue Squad and the Laurels of Willow Creek. A memorial service will be held at Hester Baptist Church in Oxford, N.C. at a later date.
Ann Cornelia “Kim” Jervey Thompson
Ann Cornelia “Kim” Jervey Thompson, 82, of Powhatan, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2011. She was born on July 26, 1929 in Newport, Rhode Island. Kim attended Amhert High School (Mass.) prior to returning to Virginia, where she graduated from John Marshall, class of 1946. She was an art major at the Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary. She retired from the mortgage field in 2002. Kim was a life long member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, it’s choir and the ECW. She loved the arts, music, animals, gardening, but most of all her family and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Ellen Thompson Moore; parents, Col. and Mrs. James Postell Jervey Jr.; grandparents, Gen. and Mrs. James Postell Jervey and Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Sullivan. She is survived by daughter, Martha Ann Thompson LeGrand (Keith); son, Robert Maxwell Thompson Jr. (Debbie); brother, James Postell Jervey III (Ruth); grandsons, Robert Maxwell Thompson III and Gabriel Ryan Thompson; stepgrandson, Michael Stanley (Teri); son-in-law, William F. Moore Jr; several nephews, great-nephews and nieces. Funeral services were held Saturday in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Interment church cemetery. Sale of Chesterfield; brother, Julius C. Morris; sister, Sylvia Jackson; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ester Mae Stewart; and one grandson, David. A graveside service was held in Little Flock Baptist Church Cemetery, Amelia. Arthur S. Trier, 59, of Powhatan, died November 15, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Julia Trier; daughters, Rebecca Erdman (Mark) of Powhatan, Roberta Bergerom (Keith) of Rhode Island, Margaret S.
