Published Jun 17, 2009 Grubbs, Marie B. Marie B. Grubbs, 85, of Powhatan, widow of Stanley H. Grubbs, died on May 24, 2009. She is survived by one son, Howard W. Grubbs (Linda) of Powhatan; one daughter, Diane McMahon of Bon Air; one brother, Mercer Hawley of Powhatan; one sister, Elsie Rubeck of Texas; six grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, Kent Grubbs, Sean, Trey, Kevin McMahon; and 10 great-grandchildren. The family received friends at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Highway (Rt. 60), Powhatan. Graveside services were held in Riverview Cemetery, Richmond. Published Jun 17, 2009 Stokes, Lucy Emma Smith The angels are rejoicing at the homecoming of Lucy on June 12, 2009, where she was reunited with her beloved, “Mr. Wilfred.” Lucy was born in Louisa, Va. on September 23, 1916. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Wilfred Ewell Stokes. She was also preceded in death by her mother and father, John and Myrtle Smith; a sister, Ruth Hamm; and brothers, Emmett and Joe Smith. She is survived by her sister, Louise Shiflett; a son, W. E. “Buddy” Stokes Jr., his wife, Kay; and her daughter, Sue Stokes Woodcock, her husband, Mark. Also surviving are grandchildren, Brandon Clark, Rachel Kneessi, Katy and Kelly Stokes; great-grandchildren, Dustin, Reagan and Gavin Clark, Noah, Taylor, Zachary Kneessi, and Lucas Crockett. Lucy was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother who was devoted to her husband, family and church. She was also a 27-year employee of J.C. Penney Co. Our family would like to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude to all of the caregivers at The Laurels of Bon Air for all of the kindness, love and respect they gave our mother and to our family. The family will welcome visitors Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Highway (Rt. 60), Powhatan. Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday in the Muddy Creek Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Published Jun 11, 2009 Clements, David Scott David Scott Clements, 46, of Powhatan, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at St. Francis Medical Center. Mr. Clements was the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Franklin, Rachel Clements, and Herman Beasley. He is survived by his wife, Debra L. Clements; a son, David Scott Clements Jr.; and a daughter, Rebecca Lynn Clements; both of Powhatan; his parents, L. Frederick and Shirley Beasley Clements of Chesterfield; a brother, L. Frederick Clements Jr. of Alabama; and maternal grandmother, Ruth Beasley of Colonial Heights. A funeral service was held 11 a.m. Monday, June 1, 2009, in Branch’s Baptist Church, 3400 Broad Rock Boulevard, Richmond, with the Reverend Matthew Brown officiating. Interment followed in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at church. Arrangements by the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Published May 28, 2009 Bass, Roy “Papa” ![]() Roy “Papa” Bass, born July 5, 1923 closed his eyes on Monday May 4, 2009 to awake with his sweet Lord and to be reunited with his beautiful loving wife of 66 years, “Nanny” Lena. “Papa” was surrounded by his family and loved ones as he travelled home. “Papa” was devoted to his church and family. He had many professions in his life such as farm manger, caretaker, grounds keeper and construction worker. There wasn’t much he couldn’t do or figure out how to do, he was great with mechanics, a true “Jack of all trades.” Providing for his family was very important to him, he made sure that we were happy and that we were on track with our lives. He loved sharing stories of his life with all the grandkids and great grandkids usually in very great detail. He had a very keen memory which we all enjoyed so very much. We could always count on him. He will always be remembered as a quiet spoken man with a gentle loving soul. “Papa” was preceded in death by “Nanny” Lena, his parents Elmer and Blaine, one sister Molly, and two brothers Whit and Jay. Papa and Nanny’s legacy will be carried on by their two daughters Mary Davidson and Sheila Stroud (Ronnie) of Powhatan Va; eight grandchildren: Paul Sylvia (Tonya), Angel East (Russell), Michael Davidson (Heather), Chris Stroud, Anthony Stroud (Kim), Ronald Stroud (Donna), all of Powhatan, Nikki Holt (Ricky) of Cumberland, and Dorothy Zborek (Joe) of Henrico, Va. Nineteen great garandchildren: Kaitlin, Mason, Megan, Tyler, Gracie, Ben, Raven, Brady, Amanda, Emily, Joey, Stephen, Noah, Surrender, Joseph, Taylor, Travis, Tasha and Tobie. Devoted neice Gaybell “Doodle” Davis and special nieces and nephews Wilma, Jackie, Robert, Jimmy and Jeaneatte. Numerous adopted grandchildren: Jonathan Willis, Jeff Willis, Heather Scott, Cheryl Howie (Bill0 and Craig Oliver. Very dear friends Ken and Priscilla Beaver, T.H. and Ginger Gilbert, Joyce and Elsie Hylton, Gary and Joyce Ann Hylton. Viewing was held at Bennett and Barden Funeral Home on May 8, 2009. Funeral service was held May 8, 2009 at Bethesda Church of God, Pastors Rick Stigile and Russell Cress officiated. Interment at church cemetery. “Papa” Roy will be greatly missed by all whose life he touched. In God’s plan, we will all be together again. To be absent for the body is to be present with the Lord. Until then, Papa “We love you always.” Published May 28, 2009 Elwell, Mariah Ann Mariah Ann Elwell, age 14, of Powhatan, went to be with her heavenly father May 18, 2009. She was preceded in death by her Poppaw and Meme. She is survived by her parents, Kevin and Sherry Elwell; grandparents, Betty Edwards, William Sexton, Robert and Janet Elwell and Chuck Colston; and many uncles, aunts and cousins. Her remains rested at Bliley’s-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family received friends on May 21 and where funeral services were held Friday. Interment Dale Memorial Park. Published May 28, 2009 Mills, Bobby Lee Bobby Lee Mills, 64, of Powhatan and formerly of Goochland, was ushered home by the angels on Saturday, May 16, 2009. Bobby enjoyed his lifelong career as a self-employed excavation contractor for 43 years. He was a loving husband, father, and Papa, and a living example of devotion. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry C. Mills. He is survived by his loving wife, Dianne Mayton Mills, whom he adored; his daughters, Christine Osgood and her husband, Todd, of Augusta, Ga., and Bethany Reed of Powhatan; nine grandchildren, Sarah and Jesse Reed, Michael, Matthew, Melissa and Megan VanDeventer, Brianna Stone, and Cameron and Haley Osgood; his mother, Louise K. Mills of Goochland; his brother, Henry Wray Mills and his wife, Bernice, of Goochland; his sister, Evie Pasedag and her husband, Jerry, of Goochland; his brother, Chester Mills and his life partner, Barbara, of Clearwater, Fla.; and many extended family members and special friends who will treasure every memory of such a special man. Memorial service announcement later. Published May 28, 2009 Tomlinson, Charles Wayne Charles Wayne Tomlinson Sr., 69, of Powhatan, passed away on May 19, 2009. He is survived by his partner, Sue Sage; four children, Connie Paulette, Paige Sauerbrey (Greg), all of Powhatan, Chuck Tomlinson (Karen) of Colonial Heights, Charlene Martin of Yorktown; his adopted son, Jason Sage (Laurel) of Pennsylvania; stepdaughter, Donna Williamson (Howie) of Cumberland; 10 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren. His passion was raising potbelly pigs and goats. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rte. 60), Powhatan, and where a memorial service was held Saturday, May 23.
