Lacroix, Claude G.

Claude G. Lacroix, 73, of Powhatan, died April 19, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Vicky Lacroix; son, Sylvain Lacroix (Karen) of Pennsylvania; daughter, Josee Sadler (Ronnie) of Powhatan; sister, Fernande Samson; five grandchildren, Michelle and John-Claude Lacroix, Joshua, Kaila and Noah Sadler; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

The family received friends on April 25 in the St. John Neumann Catholic Church, followed by a Funeral Mass. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, Powhatan conducting services.

Smith, Charles W. “Chuck”

Charles W. “Chuck” Smith, 66, of Powhatan, went to be with the Lord on April 14, 2009. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Alice Smith; son, Christopher Smith; son, David Smith and his wife Stephanie; one granddaughter, Katherine Rose Smith; one brother, Wayne M. Smith and his wife Cathy; and three beloved cousins.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of East Carolina University and was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Chesterfield. He was a retired independent health insurance agent and volunteered for Meals On Wheels.

Chuck was a devoted fan of East Carolina University Pirates and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

His remains rest at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road , where the family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Church of the Epiphany, 11000 Smoketree Drive .

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Massey Cancer Center or Meals On Wheels.

Barney, Emma O.

Emma O. Barney, 88 of Powhatan, died April 15, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Barney.

She is survived by her son, Gerald F. Barney of Illinois, sisters Marjorie Strawn, Carol Jean Clement, brother Frank Oakes (Lois); four grandchildren, Cassandra Lee Stewart (Bernie), Erin Ann Barney, Claire Emma Parrell, Nicholas Mark Parrell; treasured friend Lillie Robinson. The family’s heartfelt gratitude goes out to her companion, Cookie Winston. Emma cherished going to Aruba for vacations and playing tennis. The family received friends Sunday at Bennett and Barden Funeral Home, where services were held Monday. Interment Powhatan Community Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Blessed Sacrament Huguenot of the Elizabrth Randolph Lewsi YMCA.

Kidd, James

James Kidd L., 78, of Powhatan formerly of Nelson County, went home to be with the Lord on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jean T Kidd; five children, Dale Kidd (Robin) of Dalton, Ga. Beverly Flournoy (James) of Richmond), Paul Kidd (Lynette) of Fayetteville, Ga. Naomi Golding 9Karl) of Midlothian, Barbara Bruno (Scott) of Livingston, NY, one brother Kenneth Kidd (Frances) of Afton; one sister-in-law Ann Kidd of Crab Orchard, Tenn. Twelve grandchildren, five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Kidd served four years in the Air Force, drove for Mason Dixon Truck Company for 25 years, worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation for 10 years and was a long-time member of Branches Baptist Church, Open Door Baptist Church and Mount Moriah Baptist Church. The family will received friends April 18 at Bennett and Barden Funeral Home. Interment Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia Va. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Virginia.

Ciejek, Edward M. “Ed”

Edward M. “Ed” Ciejek, age 97 of Powhatan, died on Monday, April 13, 2009. He is survived by his wife, Nancy H. Ciejek, three sons, Dean Ciejek, Clarence Hubbard (Donna), all of Chesterfield, Gary Hubbard (Kerry) of Powhatan; one daughter Cheryl Esposito (Chris) of Chesterfield; one daughter-in-law, Faye Ciejek of Powhatan; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son James (Jimmy) Ciejek and six brothers. The family received friends April 13 at the Bennett and Barden Funeral Home. Interment Old Powhatan Baptist Church.

White, Ronald

Ronald James White, 53, of Jetersville, formerly of Powhatan, died April 9, 2009. He is survived by his wife, Connie White; son Keith White; father and stepmother, Floyd E. and Joan White of Amelia; mother and father-in-law, Nancy and FG Edwards of Smithfield. He attended Virginia Tech’s School of Architecture. He was preceded in death by his mother, Geraldine White. The family received friends on April 13 at Bennett and Barden Funeral Home. Interment Red Lane Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association or to any other charity.

Boyer, Betty Jane Phillips

Betty Jane Phillips Boyer, 85, of the 100 Block of Water Lily Loop Drive, Cape Colony, N.C., died Saturday, April 11, 2009 at Chowan Hospital in Edenton. Mrs. Boyer was born in Millersburg, Pa., the daughter of Dorothy and Charles Phillips. She was married to the late Will Lamar Boyer for 42 years. Mrs. Boyer was a homemaker and a former member of Bayside Presbyerian Church in Virginia Beach, Va. She had been an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 40, where she served as a past president. Surviving Mrs. Boyer is a daughter, Christine Drake, of the residence; and a son, Bill Boyer and wife, Christine of Powhatan, Va.; three grandchildren, Phillip A. Thornton of Marion, Va., Tracy Lynn Boyer and Brett Wade Boyer of Powhatan, Va. She was preceded in death by her only sister, JoAnn Giles. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at the Evans Funerals and Cremations Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. for friends to visit with the family, and then at 11 a.m. for the service
