Roy “Papa” Bass, born July 5, 1923 closed his eyes on Monday May 4, 2009 to awake with his sweet Lord and to be reunited with his beautiful loving wife of 66 years, “Nanny” Lena. “Papa” was surrounded by his family and loved ones as he travelled home. “Papa” was devoted to his church and family. He had many professions in his life such as farm manger, caretaker, grounds keeper and construction worker. There wasn’t much he couldn’t do or figure out how to do, he was great with mechanics, a true “Jack of all trades.” Providing for his family was very important to him, he made sure that we were happy and that we were on track with our lives. He loved sharing stories of his life with all the grandkids and great grandkids usually in very great detail. He had a very keen memory which we all enjoyed so very much. We could always count on him. He will always be remembered as a quiet spoken man with a gentle loving soul. “Papa” was preceded in death by “Nanny” Lena, his parents Elmer and Blaine, one sister Molly, and two brothers Whit and Jay. Papa and Nanny’s legacy will be carried on by their two daughters Mary Davidson and Sheila Stroud (Ronnie) of Powhatan Va; eight grandchildren: Paul Sylvia (Tonya), Angel East (Russell), Michael Davidson (Heather), Chris Stroud, Anthony Stroud (Kim), Ronald Stroud (Donna), all of Powhatan, Nikki Holt (Ricky) of Cumberland, and Dorothy Zborek (Joe) of Henrico, Va. Nineteen great garandchildren: Kaitlin, Mason, Megan, Tyler, Gracie, Ben, Raven, Brady, Amanda, Emily, Joey, Stephen, Noah, Surrender, Joseph, Taylor, Travis, Tasha and Tobie. Devoted neice Gaybell “Doodle” Davis and special nieces and nephews Wilma, Jackie, Robert, Jimmy and Jeaneatte. Numerous adopted grandchildren: Jonathan Willis, Jeff Willis, Heather Scott, Cheryl Howie (Bill0 and Craig Oliver. Very dear friends Ken and Priscilla Beaver, T.H. and Ginger Gilbert, Joyce and Elsie Hylton, Gary and Joyce Ann Hylton. Viewing was held at Bennett and Barden Funeral Home on May 8, 2009. Funeral service was held May 8, 2009 at Bethesda Church of God, Pastors Rick Stigile and Russell Cress officiated. Interment at church cemetery. “Papa” Roy will be greatly missed by all whose life he touched. In God’s plan, we will all be together again. To be absent for the body is to be present with the Lord. Until then, Papa “We love you always.”
