Nelson Gideon Bailey

Nelson Gideon “Beetle” Bailey, age 68, of Powhatan, Va., died suddenly Saturday, July 10, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman E. and Geneva Jones Bailey; and an a aunt, Louise Bailey.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years Charlotte Bailey; son, John Bailey (Preston); and daughter, Sharon Baum (Michael); five grandchildren, Jack, Brian and Carly Baum, and Pierce and Neal Bailey.

A memorial service was held July 17, 2010 at Powhatan Community Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to RF&P Model Railroaders Inc., P.O. Box 2122, Ashland, Va. 23005.


William R. Blandford Jr.

William R. Blandford Jr., 63, of Powhatan, died July 13, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, William R. and Aileen R. Blandford. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughters, Claire E. Blandford of Edgewater, New Jersey and Merritt R. Blandford of Fort Myers, Florida; brother, Jim Blandford (Dianne) of Powhatan.

A lifelong resident of Powhatan, Bill was a 1969 graduate of VMI. Bill served and honored his country as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam and Okinawa, and attained the rank of Captain in the U.S. Marine Reserves.

He earned his Master’s of Commerce at the University of Richmond in 1975 and graduated from the T. C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond in 1978.

Bill opened his general law practice in Powhatan and expanded it into neighboring counties. He was a founding member of the Powhatan County Bar Association, Senior Warden of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, member of the Powhatan County Vocational-Technical Council, past president of Powhatan Lions Club, member of Powhatan County School Board and a member of the Fine Creek Club.

The joy of Bill’s life was his family and friends, as evidenced by “Mrs. Fearnow’s U.J.R.Y.C. and C.S.,” his bi-annual Hatteras fishing trips and his Friday afternoon “Let’s.” The family received friends at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home.

A graveside service was held Friday in Emmanuel Episcopal Church Cemetery.

Judith D. Thomas

Judith D. Thomas, passed away at her home on July 6, 2010 after a long battle with cancer. She is survived by her two sons, Fred C. Haren Jr. of Powhatan, Va., and Christopher R. Haren of Alexandria, Va.; her sisters, Diana Marino of Malvern, Pa., and Mary Ellen Houston of North Cape May, N.J.; two granddaughters, Rachel and Mallory Haren; and daughter-in-law, Robyn M. Haren.

Ms. Thomas retired from Chippenham Medical Center, where she worked for 28 years, first as a critical care nurse, and later as a nurse manager.

In addition to a successful nursing career, she enjoyed playing golf, cooking, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home in Glen Allen, Va., on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at 2 p.m.

Immediately following the service will be an open house at Ms. Thomas’s residence in Rockville, Va.
