Daniel P. Gillert
Daniel P. Gillert, 81, of Powhatan, passed away August 13, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy (Patricia H.) Gillert. He is survived by his three children, Hilary Gillert, Christopher Gillert and wife, Maura, and Matthew Gillert and wife, Diane; five grandchildren, Michael, Kevin, Brian, Eric, and Alexa; and two brothers, Gustav and Alfred Gillert. Mr. Gillert was a retired major from the U.S. Air Force Reserves and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. His family received friends Bliley’s – Chippenham.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Powhatan, followed by interment at Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Joseph’s Home, Little Sisters of the Poor, 1503 Michael’s Rd., Richmond, Va. 23229.

Beverly Edwin Gills
Beverly Edwin Gills, 88, of Powhatan, died August 12, 2010. He is survived by his daughter, Trish Gills of Chesterfield; grandson, Matthew Edwin Gills of Powhatan; sister, Christine Brown of South Carolina; and one brother, Howard Porch of Richmond. The family received friends at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan. Graveside services were held Monday, 2:30 p.m. in the Powhatan Community Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Powhatan United Methodist Church.

Samuel A. “Sam” Marks Jr.
Samuel A. “Sam” Marks Jr., 89, of Powhatan, passed away August 26, 2010. He was the widower of Lucille T. Marks. He is survived by his daughter, Brenda DeBartolo and her husband, Lou; two sisters, Elizabeth Roberson and Helen Harrill; three grandsons, Mark, Matthew and Michael DeBartolo and Michael’s wife, Isabel. Sam performed with the Sunrise Hillbillies on local radio during the early 1940s. He served in the Navy during World War II and was a part owner of The Log Cabin Dine & Dance until his retirement in 1983. In recent years, he enjoyed Tuesday morning gatherings at the Chesterfield Meadows McDonald’s playing country music with friends, old and new. His family received friends at Bliley’s-Chippenham. Funeral service will be announced later.

Thomas Edward Reekes
Thomas Edward Reekes, age 85, of Powhatan, passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2010.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Buddie and Maggie Reekes.  Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Clarine Wilkinson Reekes; his daughters, Patti Reekes Cole and Rhonda Reekes Cafazza (John); granddaughters, Kimberly Cole Goff (Patrick), Anna Cafazza McChesney (Greg) and Sarah Cafazza; his great-grandson, Camden Thomas McChesney; and extended family and friends.  Tommy was a graduate of John Marshall High School.  He served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII after enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps and was an Iwo Jima survivor.  He retired from Bell Atlantic after 44 years of service and was founder, past president and life member of Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squad since 1954, a 32nd degree Mason and an active member and past commander of the American Legion Post 208 in Powhatan.  Tommy was an active volunteer in the Powhatan community and was a member of Powhatan United Methodist Church.  His remains rested at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, where the family received friends and where funeral service were held Saturday.  Interment was private.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad, Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squad or Powhatan United Methodist Church.
