Dear Editor,

I’m already sick of the election propaganda and it is more than a year away. There must be a better way for us to elect these folks.

I am appalled at how much money is raised by each candidate to make their election successful.

I think that each person running should be given the exact same amount of money and if they can’t make this work, then that’s too bad. Any amount over the chosen limit raised should go to pay the National Debt. I don’t want the candidate with the most money to necessarily be the one elected.

I am also concerned that our local officials running for office now align themselves with a particular party.

The folks in Powhatan, in my opinion, don’t need a local party system. I really don’t care if our local officials are Republican or Democrat. If they are an elected official in this county, I want them to represent all of the people.

Spending time and money trying to have a two party system in a small community, is just a power play and apparently makes some folks feel more important. Rather than be Republican or Democrat, I wish more people running for public offices would be Noble, Honest and Moral. And when I vote in the upcoming Powhatan Election, I’ll chose my candidate from this criteria, and I really don’t care what party they represent. I’m just hoping they will represent all of the people of Powhatan.

In fact, the way the men and women who align themselves with the two party system in Washington, DC are running the government gives Republicans and Democrats a bad name. Who wants to be either one?

Hurray Ruth Boatwright!
Though I see a true purpose and a significant contrast between the two political parties at national and state levels in regard to philosophy and values, in my opinion there is no need at the local level-particulary here in Powhatan.
Also, I question where the “party candidate” loyalty will lie: will he/she represent his/her district or follow the party line?
Lastly, I question the tendency or opportunity for people to vote blindly-“I’m a Democrat, Candidate X is a Democrat, therefore I shall vote Democrat”...not a vote based on knowledge of the candidate.
My vote will be with those who demonstrate that they have ALREADY BEEN INVOLVED in Powhatan-their membership in local civic, church, and other activities will tell me they’ve got a foundation and an experiential background to know Powhatan.
To the Citizens of Powhatan: Let’s be intelligent voters who are seeking intelligent, Powhatan commitment folks to lead us-not “the party ticket”.
