An open letter to Powhatan Supervisors
Published: January 19, 2012

Dear County Supervisors,

You might not understand why the residents of Powhatan have been upset in recent weeks with some of your actions.  After all, as has been explained in statements first from Mr. Moore and, in this week’s issue, from Mr. Hodge, you did what needed to be done for the betterment of Powhatan.

Even so, it’s hard to ignore what many see as a serious dereliction of your promise to remain transparent, and to include your constituents in the decision-making process.

Instead, you treated the residents of Powhatan as if we were children, as if we didn’t know what was best for us.
Sadly, even your spin leaves a bitter taste: according to your own explanations, you demanded the county administrator move faster than she was able to, and then you dismissed her when she didn’t comply. Certainly dignity, grace and class are not the core functions of government. But does that mean they should be disregarded altogether?

When, at the last supervisors meeting, Mr. Hodge launched into a tirade about his faith keeping him from attending a training session, he must have expected us not to see through what was clearly a move to divert attention from what residents were actually upset about. Worse than being silly, many of us found it insulting.

Sirs, we are not all well-educated lawyers. But we are not children. And while most of us can’t rely on spin and obfuscation to get us out of our own daily jams, we do know it when we see it. For example, you could say that the statement issued by Mr. Hodge (at right) is true. But wouldn’t that also depend on what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is?

Furthermore, I must sincerely question the reason for releasing it at all. After all, you won—in my humble opinion, as a resident of Powhatan, the thing to do now would be to release a statement on behalf of the entire board thanking Mrs. Bishop for her service and declaring your intent to move on.

The county is ready to heal gentlemen. Can we please take the first step?

It says, please don’t write that yet. I figured that was to the press and based on your earlier comments about the paper, guessed on that fact, too.

Is it not from the press? That is what makes sense.

Again, either way, glad to know she is upset at the way she was treated.

Lord,

Nobody said the press leaked this. Nobody said it came from the press. Perhaps you know something more than isn’t known about a behind the scenes PR campaign and communications ? Perhaps you are privy to conversations and strategery the public isn’t aware of. Please do share. Any email from the official CA email account is subject to FOIA…ANY and ALL of them.

Your right on your other point though, God forbid, I see women as equals in our society and feel they are entitled to the same benefits, pay, accountability and responsibilities that men are !!!!! How 2012 of me. How could I possibly look in the mirror thinking that way !!!!!!

The press has a obligation to keep an off-the-record conversation off the record. Email or no email.

Male, female, doesn’t matter. And, are you serious? You can bully a male, too. Glad to know how you like to treat women.

It’s not “off the record” when using the county email account.

Bully ?

Oh, I see, because she’s a woman, it’s unreasonable to hold her to the same standards and expectations that one would expect of a male counterpart as an equal in the workplace ? That if you do, you’re a “bully”.

How backwards thinking is that ? Expectations of equal pay and equal standing comes with equal accountability.

I have wondered at moments, if the former CA had been a male, if the sentiments, emotions, and reactions would be the same. I doubt very seriously, someone would opine that holding him accountable was the equivalent of bullying.

I am assuming you mean that is an email to the press? She said please don’t write it. Have you heard of an off-the-record conversation? From working in public relations for many years, that is a very common thing. And, so what. We all know she was a scapegaot. You prove nothing except your willingness to continue to stir the pot to make yourself look important. She is not directing anyone to not write and if the press wanted to, they did. They talked in the Richmond Paper how she said she is sad and has enjoyed working with all of the citizens of Powhatan. Actually, we are glad to see her be upset with the way the 3 treated her and the “cover your tracks finget pointing”. Many people have pointed this out, but yes, we can tell you ignore that tooo - Blame the Board of Supervisors on policies that were set in the past. They make the decisions!

She is correct, if she is writing this - you cannot blame market condiditons on an administrator and for many reasons. Please read the Richmond Paper. ALL municipalities are see downward market condidtions. The only locality that attributes that to the administrator is Powhatan and that is clear. I find her email very telling in that she is actually upset about the way she is being treated and did not want to express herself. If that is to the press again, off-the-record conversations must be checked. So, if you are saying something negative there, the press checked the facts before writing. Which, by the way, is more than we can say about that other “newspaper” that is mentioned. Talk about emotions and backstabbling. How many times has she had to retract a statement after making it.

Several. Many. And it is so obvious that and many other posts are made about that newpaper in self-promotion.

Back to the scapegoat part. Even you have mentioned it was handled in completely the wrong way. How could she not be angry. It has also been said, if they had issues, they should have given them to her and allow fixing of those issues. We all know that was not done. They wanted her out and they can and did. The decision was made in an unethical way. She did not work for them. And, they left 2 BOS members out. That has also been said numerous time.

Let her go, and they did, but this negativity and finger-pointing is making you and others look like bullies.

We are all aware that the Schools teach NO BULLYING. Guess you didn’t learn that and sure your kids are proud of their own parents for doing it. Embarrassing.

I appreciate facts and I have learned more about the goings-on of the current and former BOS and former CA from these forums - particularly from that ol’ “meanie” DG, as well as Ponz, bw and Mr. Reality - than I have ever read in the PT.

I have learned very little in the way of factual information from most of the writings of the Fan Club other than the CA is a really nice person.  But their posts deliver little in the way of facts, numbers, figures that tell the full story.  It really would be helpful if there was an opposing view that had those requisite items to deliver the whole truth.

I had no opinion about any of the personalities involved but the FACTS AND FIGURES involving OUR tax dollars has greatly concerned me.  And what really bothers me is that PT seems to have taken a position here - not only editorially but in their reporting.  I read more information about the budget retreat in a free copy of the other local newsletter than in this paper that I actually pay for.  I guess I was lucky to find a copy since someone made it their calling to remove and destroy a lot of those free papers before many people had the opportunity to read what she had to write (find a copy of the 1/19 edition for the full story.)

Intimidate,

I said no such thing. I actually said I hoped this garbage (that SHE started) didn’t hurt her chances to get employment somewhere else, because many people won’t hire a drama queen.

Don’t put words in my mouth, lest you find yourself under the same duress you threaten. You can’t sue for slander when a public official is called out on facts. Nothing I have said is something I have not seen for myself or can’t document. As a matter of course, I can back up everything I have said with memos, budgets, projections, facts and emails.

When you people consistently call me a liar or “meany”, and I then read email after email where she’s whining about being a scapegoat, saying she is being blamed for everything and not ONCE acknowledging her part or responsibility in any of it, it only verifies the immaturity and unprofessionalism. The record of results is there for all to see. Continuing to send emails stoking a PR war, and denying any responsibility dovetails with my point about the “vacation” memo…. a complete vacancy of understanding the depth and responsibilities of the position. Specifically ACCOUNTABILITY.

Here’s a small sample:

Thanks. I am trying hard to maintain grace and dignity, grace and dignity…
the repubs are making me a scapegoat. It is so tough. Have you seen their facebook page? I mean they are blaming this so called 5mm budget shortfall on me. good grief. I mean most of that is the market. all of the school budget reductions in the last few years have been state and federal. politics at its worst. Please don’t write that….yet.”

Please don’t write that yet ? Anyone who said she was bowing out with grace and that people like me were keeping it going is full of themselves. She whined and made excuses the entire time on the way out the door and she is openly directing what some people should write.

Intimidate?

Intimidate? that is your middle name. That is your MO. Only a few people just like you listen to you.

I hope she sues you for slander. You are clearly mean and maliced towards her. You have even said things like you hope she doesn’t get another job and other nasty things like that - or she will never get hired, or something. Nasty. Mean, that is you. But apparently you have a deep-seeded mean attitude to prove your point or whatever you are doing. It seems ill to many of us.

Why will you not let her go? SHE IS GONE and you won. LEAVE HER ALONE and let her move on as I heard she wants to do and I can only hope she never looks back at how insanely mean some people in this county are, like you. The intimidator. Pushy, battering.

I heard that is your MO.

Darrell G, even the local republicans aren’t listening to you. They want you to stop. You are embarrassing all. And, they “know” you.”
Funny, they all have my number. They all have my email, they all have my ear if they want it. Have not heard from any of them either way. Don’t presume to speak for anyone but yourself. I speak only for myself, not the Republicans.

When will you twits realize intimidation or the attempt to make me “feel” bad isn’t going to shut me up ? I don’t care what people think, or adjust my views based on what people will think of me. Try it sometime, it’s liberating.

What an anonymous troll like yourself says or thinks has no bearing, effect, or difference in my life. If anything, it provides me amusement that NONE of you can give one example that contradicts anything I have said about the former CA’s RECORD or lack of. Not ONE. All emotional bilge and personal feelings.

As a matter of fact, the more I dig, the more I read, the more I see it’s much worse than I ever stated. So long as you people continue to bash me, others, and those who are actually trying to move forward, I will continue to lay out the facts and the record. If you think I am going to go away and let you say what you want, spin it every way but what it is, and lay blame at the feet of everyone BUT the person(s) responsible, you’re mistaken.
