Congrats and farewell (sort of)

By Wesley Hester

Dec 26, 2007

I was delighted to announce in this week’s Powhatan Today that Roslyn Ryan had been selected as the next editor of Powhatan Today. A better choice could not have been made.

In my very short time here as interim editor, I have been fortunate enough to get to know Roslyn as a colleague and a friend, and I can assure you that this publication will benefit from her leadership.

As a Powhatan resident and sports editor, Roslyn has already gained an understanding of the people and places of Powhatan that is invaluable to a community newspaper’s editor. Having already established relationships with so many in the community, she’ll be able to hit the ground running, which is vital.

But more importantly, Roslyn genuinely cares about this county, and not just because she pays taxes here. Roslyn cares about people and how things affect them. She cares about the details — small and large. Her compassion will serve her well, as it allows her to see beyond the banal and the trivial and into the people and personalities that make this county the unique place that it is.

I suppose I should also take this opportunity to say my farewell, although I’ll still be around in a largely advisory capacity for the next few weeks.

Since taking over in October I’ve been given a crash course in all things Powhatan, and admittedly, trying to wrap my mind around it while maintaining my duties as editor in Goochland has not been easy. But it’s been fun.

My only regret is that I didn’t have more time to get to know the people and the community here better. But I leave you in good hands.

So congratulations to Roslyn, and congratulations to you, Powhatan.

first belated congratulations on your job promotion- a good story: from degree in anthropology to editor of weekly newspaper-did Margaret Mead start that way too?
also are you using Mary Kay as your excuse for not running this year?
