Eatery’s closing a true loss to community Published: April 15, 2009 Dear Editor, Five years ago, I was a new resident of Powhatan. My husband, having arrived six months before, had been taken in and taken care of by the proprietors of a local café…Becky’s. I heard many stories about the kind ladies and the wonderful local food (including locally baked bread, cheesecake, and Manakintowne Mesclun Salad). Upon my arrival from WV, we generally shared a meal a week there. Upon her arrival, my eldest daughter, whom we lovingly refer to as the café baby, became a frequent visitor as well. She has yet to miss celebrating a birthday there. Two full time careers and two children later, we are all still close but I can’t say we frequent the café anymore. This became all too apparent when I was told they would be closing their doors this month. Saddened by the news, I began to ponder the closing. We did not reduce our visits because of prices or service; it is still our favorite eatery. The issue is we have forgotten to treat ourselves and therefore have let down a wonderful local business. Between work, daycare, dance, soccer, swimming, grocery shopping, etc., etc., etc. we simply have been frequenting places that are nearest to our current activity. I took for granted that Becky’s would always be there…when we “had time”, we would go. I encourage all residents of Powhatan who feel the same way to join me….visit, pick your own teacup, throw on a boa or some beads, and a Sara Sue hat, and enjoy while the unique experience that is Becky’s Café is still here. While you’re enjoying your visit, take a little time to think about the other local places, people, and things you enjoy, that you don’t “have time” for, and find a way to schedule some time. You deserve it. Rachel T. Welsh de Iga |
