Letters to the Editor Published: June 16, 2010 Residents should come together in support of Bustos Dear Editor, It is time to bring Powhatan citizens together to move our county forward with reasoned policies not angry rhetoric and innuendo. We are faced with difficult financial times coupled with challenging decisions about Powhatan’s future. As voters, it is vital that we choose leaders who are tough minded while still having kind hearts. Our leaders must be able to make hard choices tempered with an understanding of how their choices impact the people of Powhatan, rich and poor, now and in the future. In November the citizens of District 2 will choose their Supervisor for the coming year. Because we believe that he is a man of honor and has proven to be a reasonable, tough minded and kind hearted leader, the Democrat Party of Powhatan is proud to endorse Marsell Bustos as a candidate for the Board of Supervisors. As we move forward, there will be, of course, disagreements. This is a democracy and that is what is supposed to happen, reasoned discourse not bumper sticker slogans. Party labels are not the yard stick by which candidates should be measured, but rather, they should be measured by their qualities of leadership. So let’s move forward together with civility as neighbors, even when we disagree. Let’s make the hard choices thoughtfully with respect for ALL Powhatan citizens. Let’s always remember our obligation to generational responsibility. Let’s elect a proven leader who embodies those qualities, Marsell Bustos. Paula Price
(Editor’s note: The following letter was sent to Senator John Watkins. Mr. Fralin requested that it be printed here as well). Senator Watkins, I am a resident of Powhatan County and I am in total disbelief of the plan to build a firing range off of Old River Trail, in Powhatan. How could you possibly look the other way as this plan is being thrust upon us? If you do not take a stand with us against this plan and do everything in your power to represent us as we feel we should be represented, then you are failing us and ultimately yourself. Politics is dirty, but this absolutely stinks. Do what you were elected to do. Listen to your constituents and work for us. If this firing range is built as planned and the enviroment and surrounding community is devastated, then thiswill certainly be your legacy. Good luck in future elections. You won’t have my vote. |

Mr. Bustos is on record saying that expenditures and potential tax-hikes “are the cost of doing business”? Is that the tough choices you refer to ? How is he a proven leader ? Seriously ? What precisely has he led on locally since his appointment, or before his appointment for that matter ? How can you possibly cite our generational responsibility when in less than 1.5 years there has been more spending and debt accumulated than ALL PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS COMBINED ? An absolute looting of the treasury and racking up a bill that will cause ALL of GDP to go to debt service and entitlements by FY2020. Is that the cost of doing business as well ? Leadership of mosely

Is leadership being missing in action for the last six months and changing your position on 1) Wal-mart with the payoff of a ladder truck and 2) saying we could not afford a fire station and now saying it is a public safety issue? It was a public safety issue six months ago. Submit Your Comments Below |
