Dear Editor,

We thought requesting VDOT to lower the 45 mph speed limit on the one-mile Urbine Road for safety reasons would be the right and easy thing to do. After discussing this proposal with several neighbors, we found out that several vehicles along Urbine had been pulled out of the ditch, mail boxes hit and mirrors knocked off.

Also, several residents complained about the danger of driving onto Urbine Road from their driveway with vehicles going 40 to 45 mph.

The late District Two Supervisor, Charlie Green, had requested a speed study and a centerline striping on Urbine Road. After that request, a Work Study report from VDOT’s Dale Totten stated that Urbine Road was too narrow for a centerline striping and there was not enough reported accidents to warrant lowering the speed limit on the narrow road.

The Work Study report indicated that Urbine Road was 16-17 feet wide and the road had to be at east 18 feet wide for a centerline.

Recently, a petition from all the residents along Urbine Road was given to District Two Supervisor Marsell Bustos.

We want to be proactive on safety. Waiting for reported car wrecks and injuries is not feasible.

The residents on Urbine Road feel confident that this safety issue will soon be resolved.

Thank you,
Roger Honaker

Roger, If you think that 45mph is unsafe for Urbine Road, You should take a ride on Rocky Ford Road.  The state posted Rocky Ford at 55mph last year.  If 45mph is safe for Urbine, and 55 is safe for Rocky Ford, then Route sixty should posted at 75mph.
