School Board made wrong decision in removing principal Published: August 25, 2010 Dear Editor, I’m still trying to come up with a possible reason why three out of five School Board members would decide that an appropriate response to an allegedly crooked bookkeeper would be giving the Principal, Linda Dail a “lateral transfer.” A quick check of the Powhatan County Schools website revealed three financial positions on an administrative level at the School Board; two Assistant Superintendents for Finance and Business Operations, one who has a listed salary of $95,810, the other’s salary is not listed, as well as a Superintendent of School Board Accounts, salaried at $61,452. (Salaries are as of March, 2010, as reported by Powhatan Today.) I believe it is safe to assume that the three administrative-level financial positions are filled by qualified individuals with a background in finance. It is also safe to assume that taxpayers are paying these individuals in excess of 200k to oversee the financial workings of the school system. I would have anticipated the Board to instill a safeguard for school held funds, utilizing said personnel. Yet the only action the School Board is reportedly taking is to remove the Principal, who I would assume has a background in education. The decision to remove a Principal that the majority of the Board agrees, “served with distinction,” replace her with a current Assistant Principal, and leave their position unfilled defies common sense. This is especially true in light of these tough economic times that call for making the most of our resources. Diane Elrod |

Susan (& that’s not your real name)— ya pierced my heart with your malicious words toward our Board member. Au Contraire about the ‘truth’ being told! THIS board member is about the most honest person in the county and her words are substantiated by facts. Some of ya’ll don’t tend to like that…‘cause when she investigates and lines up those facts, the OZ behind the curtain is revealed & the pretty pretense is well, not quite so pretty. If I were a bettin’ man, I’d say that if & when she comes down off that board, Powhatan is gonna see the real TRUTH unleashed like never before. Until then we can all be quite sure that the other board members who listen, do so because they value the truth over relationsips, connections and the social bennies. Ya know, live by ‘principles’ as opposed to ‘principals.’ Thought you might enjoy the play on words! There isn’t a person out there who believes she controls anyone or is ‘out of control.’ Guess character building isn’t one of your forteis. Sad to see your zero respect for parents of children with disabilities—deducing them to mere ‘puppets.’ Get to know them. Get to know their children and their struggles. Ask them what THIS single board member has done to help them. Then dare ask what she has reaped from her unselfish donation of time, energy, & expertise. You’re gonna find the answer is ‘nothing.’ Unless you count the never ending persecution (like your posting) for her good will. We, the readers you refer to as ‘dumb’ should listen to you because you heard 3rd hand info. from some frightened teacher friends? Because those who live in other counties know more? Or because you are so objective? Don’t know what your personal vendetta is against this ONE Board member (who ironically voted on the majority side re: Dail)-Bless your heart, but ya might want to seek some professional help. bornhere of Powhatan

LMAO—first let me thank you for putting it so perfectly and succinctly..Linda Dail, in our experience, chose to overlook a problem, rather than deal with it, and it blew up in her face..Rather than deal with the child, she chose to “engage” the parents—us…BAD MOVE.. Susan Pierce—and I suspect that is not your real name, you are rude, crude and obviously mis-informed. We parents of handicapped children have not been “prayed” (sic) upon. Instead, we have been helped by someone who has knowledge of the system, cares about our children and wants to see them get the best help possible. What more could someone ask for in a school BOARD member? I think your attacks are personal in nature, and have no basis in fact, just malicious “slanging”. And…why pick out one school board member for your tirade?? Why not take on the others who voted the way they did? Or have you been goaded on by one of the protagonists in this epic production staged by Linda Dail??
Whoa there Nelly!

Wow, that is a lot of hatred there, Susan, and from someone who seems to be saying they don’t even live here. Have you thought about the fact that you are trying to ruin the reputation of someone you don’t even know and sounds like you haven’t even met? It seems to be many of the board members “advocate” for things they are passionate about and btw, no one controls Rick Gideons, and if you don’t know that, you don’t know much about that board. Why don’t you give specific details and name the board member? Because then you would have to be responsible for the things you say in that post. I believe the board member you reference has some children with disabilities herself and might just know something about them. Go figure. One thing I am certain of is that this person votes based on facts and always has and how in the world you possibly think you know it was a personal issue for her and not based upon someone’s performance is mind boggling when you don’t even know the person and it is clear it was a closed session discussion. There were two other votes you know so what could be there personal agendas? You or your friend clearly has an axe to grind and instead of putting forward facts, you spew out garbage. Sounds more like a disgruntled employee issue. Tired of Powhatan

Susan Peirce if that is actually your name. I believe you need to carry your box of kleenex tissue and go join Mrs. Dail’s pitty party. Get real. parent in powhatan of School Board discussion

I was very shocked to read Susan Peirce’s comments above about the ‘advocate’ or ‘that woman’ on the school board. No, we parents of kids with different abilities are not preyed upon (or dumb, your elegant wording) except by those that wish to hide things or dismiss responsibilities.. I sadly think someone like who you say you are might be the most preyed upon, by misinformation and untruths. LMAO of Powhatan

Susan Pierce who are you and where do you get your info? I guess you don’t have any children that require special attention because they are handicapped. I think you are as foolish as Linda Dail. To think she was fulfilling her duties. Yeah right! Her thought as well as the rest of the school system is “Its cheaper to ship them off out of the county versus hiring the right personnel to teach and care for them”. I hope you are never BLESSED with a special needs child because only then will you know the true Linda Dail and your wonderful school board. Susan Peirce of Powhatan

“Hello” - Aug. 25, is correct - the problem is the School “BROAD” on the school board. Good play on words, even if it was accidentally mispelled. I am friends with many teachers in your county and they are afraid to speak out. Until that woman is removed from the school board, you will never know the truth. For her, it is a power trip based upon her preying on parents of handicapped students and using them as puppets for her own selfish agenda. In this case, it is a personal issue for her, as usual, and has nothing to do with Mrs. Dails’ performance. She makes decisions based upon whether someone has allowed her to bully them or whether they have had the guts to tell her NO. She is out of control and needs to be stopped. Why do the others allow her to control them? If you believe she stopped acting as an advocate when she got on the board, you are as dumb as those who allow her to control them. Relieved of Powhatan

I believe she received exactly what she deserved. She was given the responsibility of managing the school. Evidently she failed. Plus good old KARMA has come through again. She should think of all the toes she stepped on through the years and be thankful she lasted as long as she did. Fly on the wall

Disappointed, your logic escapes me. Because some citizens have expressed their concerns about things that happened with the principal which they have a right to do just like those who expressed their support for the principal, then the BOE had to have acted with a grudge or some axe to grind. As you admit, those individuals do not know the facts any more than anyone else outside that closed meeting knows them. It is a natural reaction for people on both sides of the issue to speak out. Some supporters have said some pretty darned hateful things to some of the other posters as well. I don’t think there would have been a majority agreement if there were not facts to justify their actions. It is a nice diversionary topic though that encourages people to question the vote - it just isn’t a logical one. Submit Your Comments Below |
