Letter Published: November 08, 2011 To The Editor, Our incumbent has for years been heavily in favor of enticing corporate “big box” stores to Powhatan as the solution to all our tax and economic woes. He doesn’t seem to know that most people in this country work for small businesses, and that every dollar spent at a local small business circulates through the local economy more times, and benefits it more, than that same dollar spent at a big box store whose profits go to a headquarters somewhere else. The incumbent’s campaign brochure tells us he donates his county salary to help pay real estate taxes for elderly and disabled homeowners. Helping strangers in need is a very generous and admirable act, and he should be commended for this. But… how many times did he throw some firewood in the back of his pickup and take it a mile and a half down the road to our medically disabled neighbor, on a very fixed disability income, who relied entirely on a woodstove for heat? That neighbor has moved out of the county. How many of his aquaintances did he refer to the home based business just a few doors away; a single parent struggling to keep their home? That neighbor now rents, in another part of the county. When you wax eloquent on building community as often as the incumbent does, I think you ought to be slightly more observant of your neighbors in need. Many of you may remember how the incumbent made a political name for himself, and announced his first campaign for Supervisor four years ago. He resigned from the Planning Commission in protest to the Board of Supervisors cutting him off when his allotted speaking time was up. Some people felt he was some kind of folk hero standing up for his right to be heard. Well, I can tell you from personal experience, he has stomped out of an organization’s board meeting in order not to have to listen to someone else. And I have seen his short temper when others argue against his position. His literature talks about his belief in openess and inclusion, but my experience working with the incumbent has taught me that he likes closed meetings and backroom deals and secret financial arrangements. As a Supervisor he favors exempting County business from coverage by the Freedom of Information Act. He doesn’t want the public to have the right to know what our local government is up to. I think President Woodrow Wilson said it beautifully: “Everybody knows that corruption thrives in secret places and avoids public places, and we believe it is a fair presumption that secrecy means impropriety.” (I can still hear Mr. Tucker’s footsteps loudly, and quickly, exiting the building as soon as I began to speak those words.) I remember in 11th grade we asked his daughter where she thought babies came from, and she said the stork. We told her to go home and ask her parents how babies are really made. She came back the next day and said her parents told her that when two parents pray really hard god gives them a baby. Haaaaaaha. Gary V. House of Same Street as above

Hear, hear!!! But if you are not going to be a person who is “meddling” as “I know better” puts it, you will never know the truth other than what you are told by those who believe they are the Rulers. “I know better” does not know…...and is afraid to ask and seek the truth. Thank you Sandra for speaking out and taking a stand for Truth, Justice and the American Way. Your are Super! Sincerely, Sandra Person of Powhatan

LG, good points! Carson can be a terrific person. And as our District 5 Super, I pray that he will keep to his election promises, “Principles and Values” with transparency. You are correct! It is the citizens’ money that they spend. And our elected officials need to stick around and listen to our questions. I think that Carson will in this new future. And Sandra? She is a good person and a good, dependable neighbor. LG of Powhatan

Yes, at least Sandra had the gumption to sign her name. Carson Tucker is a terrific, helpful person. But I myself would like an explanation of why it is OK for him to storm out when he doesn’t like what he is hearing- and why the voters put up with it. He thought quitting his PC position showed up the BOS, but he was really showing up the people of Powhatan. It’s their money. Gary of Same street as above!

Of course, my letter was directed to “I know better…” like they know anything at all. Gary V. House, Gary of Same street as above!

Wow, what an angry person. I am sorry that you seem to be sooooo angry that you viciously attach a hard working and long standing neighbor and Powhatan resident. And then you have demonstrated your back stabbing by failing to even sign the fallacious statements and ridicule. Some may say that is gutless, but I would say the softer version, just a “scaredy cat.” Your examples are just flat out wrong. I was also there when Carson exited the room before the 4th word of the quote, huffing and puffing followed by a couple of Carson’s minions. That shows that he knew the historical quote himself and was afraid to face up to it. How detailed do you really want to go anyway about that “community organization” that has excluded much of the community? You are right about two things. 1) Woodrow Wilson was a bad president, but his quote sure fit the situation. 2) Carson won! And good for him! Heck, Woodrow Wilson won back in 1912 and the Country survived. Jimmy Carter won in 1976 and we survived! Obama won! With God’s help and a voting public, we will survive after 2012! We are all neighbors on this road and it is time that all the people began acting like it. Stop condemning people you really know nothing about. Wave and say “hello.” And smile sometime for gosh sakes. In this day and age, we may need each other at some time or another. And if you know that someone needs help, don’t be afraid to offer help or to ask how they are doing. It is time for the elitist clique to come to the real world with the rest of the public or risk their continued separatist lives. Really, I am getting tired of laughing at you. . It does take a special person to get involved in politics. It also makes them very public and very open to public opinion. Politicians are supposed to represent all their constituents. I know that must be hard, especially if the politician listens only to himself or to those who agree. We are proud to have Carson as a neighbor. We are also not afraid to stand up for what we believe, even if it means a black eye. Transparency and asking questions (Oh, I am sorry, you call it “meddling.”) does mean safety for all of us. We have rules, so follow them! The end does not justify the means, except to the Ruling Class and/or thugs. Hey, we all hope to see you, whoever you are, at Board of Supervisor Meetings. Sincerely, I know better of Powhatan

What a ludicrous letter you write. Having read it and knowing your rich background as owner of a large farm in the county and having no discernable employment during your entire life, you apparently have the time to droll on about a person who you publicly despise and ridicule. I am sure you spend all your family fortune in the county living so close to Goochland, having seen you there shopping. You are also a busy body, having so much free time to nose into your neighbors business. Maybe the unfortunate persons did not want the county to know of their misfortune and did not make it a public matter as you have done.
