Letters to the Editor
Published: July 15, 2010

Dear Editor,
Back in the late 1930s and early 1940s Powhatan was a rural county. Over the years came May’s Store, IGA and Bloxton’s Pharmacy – then Powhatan Pharmacy. Powhatan Pharmacy expanded and now owns several stores in neighboring counties. I don’t recall anyone trying to stop them from expanding. Then came Food Lion and ran May’s Store and IGA out of business. Nobody squawked about that.

With the expansion of Powhatan, outsiders came in and now they want to run the county.

There have been several letters written to your paper expressing opposition to Walmart coming into the county, and very few expressing support.

In one letter that I can recall a man stated he was only 10 minutes from Walmart in Midlothian. He needs to live in the western end of the county where it’s 45 minutes to Walmart in Midlothian.

I was born and raised in Powhatan County and have lived here for 77 years.

I open my arms to Walmart. I only regret that it is not at Rt. 522 and Rt. 60.

H. Lee Puett
Powhatan
