My point of view

Jan 09, 2008

Editor’s note: The following is Supervisor Carson Tucker’s response to a question that was posed to the Board in last week’s issue.

imageMy resolution for the New Year is to work with my peers, County staff, and all the citizens who’ve invested so much to make the new Comprehensive Plan a reality. At this juncture in our history, Powhatan needs the vision and guidance a CP will help provide us.

My second resolution is to forge a strong bond of cooperation and synergy among the Board, the Planning Commission, the County staff, and the citizens willing to participate in the good government of Powhatan. This does not mean we will all see eye to eye on every issue. It does mean we’ll work together, listen attentively to each other, show respect and civility, even when we passionately disagree: we are all trying to do the right thing.

My third resolution is to involve as many Powhatan citizens as possible in understanding the workings of government, the value/essentiality of good-faith participation, and the balancing act we all go through trying to hold down taxes while providing the necessary services.

My fourth resolution is to strike out into fresh economic development territory, working closely with the Director of Economic Development and other Board members as we seek the balance (again!) between maintaining our rural character, on the one hand, and on the other, the serious need to widen our tax base to help ease the burden on farmers and homeowners especially our elderly or disabled citizens and those on fixed incomes.
