The weather was sunny and warm for the fourth annual Powhatan-Goochland Farm Tour, which took place on Saturday, September 10, 2011. Reporter Emily Darrell visited all the Powhatan stops on this year’s tour to shoot a few photos.

Featured are:

• Belmead, 5000 Cartersville Road, a 2,000-acre former plantation recently placed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s list of “America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.” Also featured was the property’s organic garden started five years ago by Sister Jean Ryan.

• Oakdale Farm, 5719 Cartersville Road, a nationally recognized equestrian center specializing in dressage, stadium jumping, and cross-country racing.

• The historic Michaux-St. James Church, 4097 Old River Trail Road, where lunch was served.

• Kelona Farm, 4277 Old River Trail Road, which produces 1,200 acres of corn, soybeans, wheat and barley and runs a 50,000-bird poultry operation for Tyson Foods.

Great event - look forward to next year.  Good thing for kids.

Homemade pies at Michaux-St James were unbelievable.  Chicken farm very interesting and J.S. Reynolds informative.  Baby calves at beef farm.  Finally got to visit Belmeade - Sister had a terrific community garden and very helpful with advise on how she enhanced the soil, garden layout and drip irrigation.  She was terrific.  Ran out of time for Oakdale.
