Public comment period a necessary part of meetings
Published: March 30, 2011

Dear Editor,

I would like to discuss the need for public comment at future workshop events. As a citizen of this county, I feel the need to have more public comment periods to address the needs of every taxpayer when the issues are more complex than ever. As members of the Board of Supervisors, we elected you to work for us, and you have the responsibility to listen to the problems that each of us face from time to time in order to come up with some common sense solutions.

The public comment period allows us to have that First Amendment right as citizens of Powhatan, which is a great way for all of us to be heard and have some input. To allow that right be more and more limited is a disgrace not for us Powhatan citizens, but for the Founding Fathers of this great country of ours who helped defend it, including our soldiers who fought and died for that right.

So to the members of the Board of Supervisors, Thank you for your time and understanding on this matter

Let freedom ring and don’t tread on me.

Well Stated CT,

I for one believe you’ve “hit the nail squarely on the head”. Public Officials have an obligation of duty to meet and discuss public issues with their constituents. Anything else is simply more Taxation With Out Representation (or Respect) once elected.

Town Hall Meetings are how we became an informed Colony and later a Nation. Public Dialog at Public Meetings with Public Officials is NOT Unreasonable, Illegal, or Alien…it is AMERICAN.

Good news CT, We Americans have another tradition which corrects Abusive Public Officials from abusing their citizens…it’s called Elections.

Elections as you well know, allow citizens like you to select individuals Out of Public Office. This November, Members of the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors are running for re-election.

You, and others who agree with you. must make well reasoned choices and consider who will be no longer an Abuser of Public Trust. Sadly some members are NOT worthy of public respect.

At a recent BOS Meeting, your self-respect and public dignity were not to be found in several chairs on the Board on Supervisors. Their loss, they could learn much by what you were about to say but they denied an opportunity to speak. Many in attendance where shocked and ashamed of their representatives.

Well Done CT, Powhatan Citizens are Proud of You….

OBTW: Hiding behind legal council even if legal isn’t right. Their position was a poor second place position for real leaders. Real leaders hear their citizens speak, understand their troops, and do the right thing.
