Second Historic Bike Ride was huge success for Powhatan Published: May 25, 2011 “By the end of the ride, my legs were saying stop, my brain was saying I wish there was more.” On April 17 Powhatan hosted the Second Annual Historic Bike Ride to benefit our free clinic. Almost 400 riders biked a 30, 60, or 100 mile trail that swept through Powhatan and Amelia. Sunny skies and 75 degree temperature definitely contributed to the huge success and high turnout to the bike ride. Enthusiasts from many all over Virginia and other states came and enjoyed the weekend in our county. The eight rest stops included the historic sites of Moseley Tavern, Belmead, Paxton, and Riddings, highlighting the immense rural beauty of this county. The proceeds, which totaled over $10,000 will benefit the Free Clinic of Powhatan. This clinic is a nonprofit organization that provides free medical, dental and mental health service to the low income, uninsured adult population of our county. The ride would have never happened without the dedication and enthusiasm of volunteers and host organizations. The ride’s co-chairs Marsell Bustos and Maureen Moslow-Benway were supported by John Rothert, Connie Moslow, Tina Bustos, Lee Keyt, Jeff Kling, Bill and Karen Sommers, Don Mathis and Paul Germain. Gary Ringer did a great job designing the three bike routes. Special thanks goes to the Powhatan Chamber of Commerce, Powhatan Historical Society, Virginia Defense Force, Free Clinic of Powhatan, Discover Powhatan, Central Virginia Bank, Royall Pump and Well, Mikkon Construction, Lummie Jones and Colony Construction. Also, a big thank you to all the Powhatan residents who came to ride. Looking forward to next year, we fully anticipate attracting over a thousand bike riders to this great early springtime Powhatan event. Sincerely, |
