School budget issue from the view point of a PHS Senior
Published: February 24, 2010

Dear Editor,

As a part of the requirements of my Art III class at Powhatan High School, we are to create artwork based on a current event in our society. This helps us understand what is going on in the “real world,” but in a way we as students can interpret it.

For our last current event assignment, we were to find articles that addressed the economic situation in our county or state and show how this affects us, the student body. Since school funding has been an increasingly discussed issue lately, it was not hard to find inspiration for my piece.

The artwork I created shows how much impact these cuts are really taking on the school systems. Since the bulletin board is a familiar format for teachers and students alike, it was my “canvas,” so to speak. I hope that it speaks to you as well, and you can understand this school budget issue from my point of view.

Sincerely,
Whitney Cole
PHS Senior

Wal-Mart
I feel that Powhatan needs that Walmart, with un-employment being what it is I’ll sure that some of the working force would love to have a job. The ones against this is those ones who want to see th county stay like it was for years..This has to stop, there are people out there who need work and what a unequal gift. Wake up people that Wal-Mart has ALOT TO OFFER AND WHAT 300 JOBS.
You let all those people in from Chesterfield and now you’re going to pay they price.

I enjoyed the open house at Belmeade on May 22 but was very disappointed there wasnt any information about the history of the Cocke Family and the house itself. It was so sad to go into what was once a beautiful home and see it in such disrepair. The Catholic Church has so much money, I wonder why they let this Historical property decline to the state its in?

AS proud as I am as an employee of the school system I am equally as confused when the administration won’t take action against employees that sit around on the job, stay outside in the smoking area or stand around talking at least a third of the time they are on the clock. If the right person were to watch these DEADBEAT workers and take action, that would solve the budget problem without affecting the lives and families of workers that believe in an honest days work for an honest days pay.If you don’t want to work while you are at your job,go home so a person that will do a good job takes your place.

Excellent commentary of the current state of our schools.  Great way to use a little bit of humor and satire to drive home the point of our current budget situation.
