Not so fast

In the end, it was the toast that got me.

I knew I had a problem when I found myself trying to figure out how much I could get done — empty the dishwasher, sort yesterday’s mail, etc. — in the time it took to toast two slices of bread.

While I was eating the toast I was thinking of the calls I needed to make once I got to work; while I was making those calls I was already thinking of all the things I still had to do once I got off of work.

Upon examination, I don’t think I fit the profile for your typical maniacal multitasker. I don’t have… Read more...

Who do we think we are, anyway?

image Did you ever say something that you realized was going to sound ridiculous just before it came out of your mouth, but you couldn’t stop and you said it anyway? Yeah. Me too. It happened to me recently, when someone asked me how I would describe the general population of Powhatan County. “Well,” I said, — and I’m obviously not one of those people who is terribly clever when put on the spot — “we sure do… Read more...

My point of view

Editor’s note: The following is Supervisor Carson Tucker’s response to a question that was posed to the Board in last week’s issue.

imageMy resolution for the New Year is to work with my peers, County staff, and all the citizens who’ve invested so much to make the new Comprehensive Plan a reality. At this juncture in our history, Powhatan needs the vision and guidance a CP will help provide us. My second… Read more...

My New Year’s resolution? Embrace change.

image The best advice I ever received about tackling challenges, believe it or not, was from an article I happened to pick up about improvisational acting. The article was discussing the two most important words to ensuring that a particular exchange between two or more improv actors is successful. Those two words, which I’ve always tried to keep in mind whenever I felt particularly challenged, were “yes…and?” The idea, or at… Read more...

A new year brings new hope for early education

New Year’s is a time for reflection on where we’ve been, the lessons learned, and how we can better ourselves for the future. Unfortunately, many resolutions to help our children better succeed in school have been broken.

Every year, about one-third of American children enter a kindergarten class unprepared to learn. Many will never catch up. That all-important door to learning is already, in effect, closed. The reasons for this are complex, but this much is clear: The multiple systems – from family to schools to government – that should be supporting young children… Read more...

A little change of place

image When I learned that I had been hired as the new editor of Powhatan Today, two thoughts immediately sprang to mind. The first thought was that I had just been presented with a wonderful opportunity, one I would never even dreamed of when I started here as the sports editor just a few years ago. The second thought? I had better not mess this up. I say this only half in jest, because I do recognize that with this new adventure comes a great responsibility… Read more...

Congrats and farewell (sort of)

I was delighted to announce in this week’s Powhatan Today that Roslyn Ryan had been selected as the next editor of Powhatan Today. A better choice could not have been made.

In my very short time here as interim editor, I have been fortunate enough to get to know Roslyn as a colleague and a friend, and I can assure you that this publication will benefit from her leadership.

As a Powhatan resident and sports editor, Roslyn has already gained an understanding of the people and places of Powhatan that is invaluable to a community newspaper’s editor. Having already established… Read more...

State parks, arrests and Web sites

Good News

On Monday it was announced with Governor Kaine’s budget plans that he had set aside $3 million for a state park in Powhatan County.

That’s big news for the county and the many people that have worked tirelessly over the last couple years to make the park happen. Granted, the reality of a park is still a couple years away and the funding ultimately rests on the General Assembly’s shoulders, but this is a major step in the right direction.

The inclusion in the Governor’s budget also reaffirms the belief by park planners and supporters… Read more...

Thanks, Evel

The world owes a debt of gratitude to the late Evel Knievel, not only for his daring deeds but also for lending his name to the greatest toy of all time - the Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle.

Knievel died at the age of 69 after years of deteriorating health brought on by hard living and even harder impacts with the pavement. He left behind awesome jumpsuits, entertaining footage of motorcycle jumps gone awry, a guy he beat senseless with a baseball bat, and the Stunt Cycle, the aforementioned greatest toy of all time.

You are free to argue with me, insisting that Mr. Potato Head was… Read more...

Pay the bills

The U.S. Senate has once again defaulted on its obligation to pay the nation’s bills, preferring to pass to our children and grandchildren another $50 billion worth of debt.

The Senate voted Thursday to put a one-year fix on the Alternative Minimum Tax but chose not to replace the $50 billion in federal revenue that will be lost by this tax cut.

The AMT was passed by the Congress in 1969 as a way of ensuring that high-end earners paid some tax even if their accountants found them a slew of tax loopholes and deductions. The concept behind the tax is sound.

At that… Read more...
