...Everyone, I must apologize about my comments to “Get Prepared”! After watching 60 minutes last night my jaw dropped when I was informed of the possibility of a cyber attack on our electricity grid along the east coast. After removing my foot from my mouth, I realize how under prepared and equipped my family and I were. I never knew that an attack on the electro-grid could leave the east coast in total darkness for months…all those large generators that run many of our power plants are not made in America! So again I must apologize, it was I who was thinking small minded…we all want the best for our kids and their future…I guess the only advice I can give is… “..don’t be quick to judge, shut and listen to others opinion and most important, if you are ever wrong, be decent enough to admit it!” Good Luck to our Future! The question was “What is the one piece of advice you would give to students as they head out into the world?” I find that survival is the most important thing. Stuff is great, but stuff can disappear in an instant. I love electricity, and I’m PREPARED with a generator in case It does get cut off. Anyone with common sense can see a failing economy, and anyone who takes the effort to do some research can see the increasing value of resources such as gold vs the fall of our own dollar. The reason for my response is due to the majority of kids I see leaving school don’t know how to do anything because of their nanny lifestyle. I see too many college students who can’t live on their own at all. They don’t know how to cook anything outside of shoving something in a microwave and can hardly walk a campus without passing out. If they think Ipods, playstation, and myspace is more important than their well being, then suffer they shall. Good words from Anon, but I think that the first thing people should be familiar with is Murphy’s Law. I expected that kind of response from a “Republican in Hiding.” Keep thinking that life is all glitter and that anything is possible with an education. But I will tell you, joining the military will be the best decision you will ever make. Not only will you learn how to take care of yourself, but you will see beyond the fake lifestyle the USA has compared to the rest of the world and learn to cherish life instead of things. And just so you know, I think Glenn Beck is a joke. Anon

It’s not about paranoia. Preparation is very important. Our culture is a wall to how precious life is. There is nothing wrong with enjoying the things we have, but have your priorities straight. It’s as simple as buying food before a TV. If you can afford nice things, then get them! But be prepared for anything. If you have a TV, great! But if you power goes out how will you entertain yourself? If a tornado rips through your house, will you be prepared? It’s more than just guns and gear. Do you have insurance, a safe, emergency money? Being prepared goes all the way into the 75 cents in your pocket for a pay phone! Spending your summer working out and maybe taking Karate or a self defense course is a great idea! Things happen all the time. Life isn’t always peachy! I think the most important thing is having faith in God. With Him, you can make it through everything! Republican In Hiding of Goochland

Excellent advice from everyone except for “be prepared” ...Exactly what are we being prepared for? ...Paranoia! If you are going to give advice at least live by it…how were you able to post a message here without electricity and an internet connection? Look buddy, stop watching Glen Beck, that if you have electricity,…take a shower and brush your teeth and go out and get a date and enjoy life. Our kids have enough pressure on them already and convincing them to be Poor White Trash is not our race future in Virginia. Most of us have a little education and love the property we own and we plan to leave a legacy that will continue to keep us in power…not in fear and paranoia! Get Prepared

Invest in resources. Don’t just save money, buy gold, silver, and brass. Buy a firearm, learn everything about it. Plant a garden. Learn to live without running water, electricity, and heat/ac. Get in shape. Be prepared for anything. Wish I Had Known This of Powhatan, Va

Everything you do makes a difference. You may think that if you make bad decisions it won’t matter because you are so young, but it will. You can certainly get past the mistakes that you make but you will one day wish you had done the right thing. Do the right thing to start with and you will have no regrets. Darrell G

Life will never work out exactly the way you plan. There will be days where you will wonder how everything went sideways so quickly and how people can expect you to continue to function. You will find out on these days just how strong you really are. Bad times will pass. Strength of Character remains. L

Gosh, where to I begin…first, I agree with everything said by ‘parent and teacher’. In addition to that, try to remember that the things that you do today can affect the plans that you have for tomorrow. I graduated from Longwood about 10 years ago, but as a freshman, I remember falling into the credit card trap, getting 2-3 cards in one year and thinking that I was responsible enough to handle it….well, I wasn’t and I paid for it in so many ways-just take the time to think about the consequences of your actions. parent and teacher

If you are college bound, don’t miss class and if they assign reading, read it! Also, the weekend does NOT start on Thursday if you have a class on Friday. If you are going to the world of work, look neat, look people in the eye, be polite and don’t call off work unless you are really sick. “Yes m’am” works wonders too! Submit Your Answer Below |
