Budget Woes

A number of county officials have pinned the blame for the current county budget woes on the state. Where do you think the buck stops?

okay so the soccer gods have spoken. this is from my earlier question.

i said that habs and stars would lose if liverpool lost today’s soccer match vs chelsea.

and chelsea won 3-2, with more points aggregate going to chelsea making it 4-3 over liverpool.

i think i also said that if liverpool had won carey price would start the game, and since they didn’t i’m going to stick with that. i can’t change predictions. BUT hopefully carbo does start him and carey has a good game.

i’m trying to make it so that the habs will come up with something but based on what i said earlier the flyers and sharks (eww) are going to win tonight.

GO HABS!!!!
go stars!
who do you think is going to win the hockey games tonight…but there are so many of them already so mine is all based on soccer.

and also flyers fan, i’m watching the news so i can’t get to sports news till 6:30, but really, they said that he’s not starting at the warmup. well earlier today carbo was still undecided and at preskate no one knew who would start. and also agree 100% with Mike. i hope that halak gets an oppertunity to be a starting goalie because he is that good. i already said that in the halak vs price questions a little bit earlier today. a cold halak is not like a cold price. he’s really a good goalie, and his technique is a merge, while carey’s is mostly one style.

Thank you for setting the record straight, as I previous posted “Has this changed?” I was unaware of the change. I will agree with you that Powhatan has some of the best to offer.  However, I can honestly say I do say fat or waste that could stand to be trimmed.

Keeping it real

Let’s keep the record straight; Mr. Woodson does not make $80,000 for football and athletic director.  He makes that for being a teacher with 30 years experience.  He additionally gets a stipend to coach football AND a stipend to be the athletic director with both of those individually being anywhere from 6% to 10% of his $80,000 teacher salary.  He may even get another stipend to be driver’s ed coordinator.  It is pretty simple math but that is an additional $10,000-$15,000 for coach/athletic director that isn’t shown.  None of the coaches’ salaries are shown.  Yet there are several people on the “chopping block” so to speak that don’t make nearly that amount yet will be facing 8% pay cuts by way of going from 12 months to 11 months.  They will also lose vacation time and their health insurance will go up.  The school board says they want to save jobs but by severely crippling a few to help the population will do nothing but create animosity.  There should be an even pay decrease across the whole system no matter what that % may be.  If it takes a 5%-6% cut to balance the budget then so be it; but a few people should not lose a very large amount while the rest lose very little.  Do you think a 3% cut to Dr. Meara or her cronies will hurt them nearly as much as an 8%-10% cut would hurt those that make 1/4 of there salary?

Do your homework…Mr. Woodson has been promoted to Athletic Director and is no longer simply a 10 month employee. Have you ever been to the high school after hours? Have you seen all of the sporting events that are going on? Have you ever asked what it entails to be sure that our children get to and from an away game, that our officials/refs have been scheduled, that our fields are ready, that safety and regulations are being adhered to? In the real world you get promoted for being a dedicated, loyal, competent employee! Before name bashing why not look to see if he had been promoted? Also, if you are wondering how the salaries compare in Powhatan to other public schools…they are in the bottom 50% of Virginia despite the excellent SOL scores, graduation rates, and many other factors that tend to go unnoticed during budget times.

Somehthing else to note:

Why in the HECK does Mr. Woodson make 80k a year? Last time I was in school he was the football coach and driver’s ed teacher. Has this changed?  Seriously 80k?

I am sorry for those that feel embarrassed about the school salary listing.  It makes you feel out of sorts to have everyone know what you make.

If you have a job and see a central office employee relative or friend in the same job, making much, much more, that is unfair.  Making a job 12 months instead of 9.5 when it is not required by the job is money thrown away.  The experience level is the pay scale on the list.  I know not everyone is started at a 0, but where do you start someone when they have no background in the schools or the job?  Those are the ones that should be embarrassed.

So to all of the custodians, instructional assistants, cafe workers, and others that are so low on the scale, there is no shame in the jobs you do.  We appreciate those of you that go to work every day, do your job to the fullest, and work a fair days work for a days pay.  You teach our kids too, just by being proud of what you do and a job well done.  You all know of people with your same jobs however that don’t pull their weight and can give you a bad reputation, it happens everywhere.  I am sorry about that.

To the teachers, a high percentage of you work very hard, and we thank you for loving your job and the children you teach.  You can look around you every day and see those that share what you believe and your mission, but just like anywhere else, there are those that don’t.

To the Special Education teachers, you have your work cut out for you, thanks for bearing part of the load for the teachers lucky enough to teach your kids.  You deserve appreciation and thanks for helping make lesson plans, grade papers, and to help them teach just to name a few.  Not all teachers are lucky enough to have this assistance and it greatly lightens their load.

To everyone that works in the school system: Did you got your job or promotion the real old fashioned honest way of applying along with others for an advertised job and were truly the best person for the job?

No Fat Here,

I would agree with you that some of the fat needs to be cut at the top.  However, I don’t think the school system is doing enough to look at ways to save money.  I just briefly looked at the list and we have over 20 janitors for 5 schools.  Most of these are making over 20k a year.  Why couldn’t these jobs be eliminated and provided by an outside service. Same with the cafe staff, why doesn’t the school look for outside vendors which most companies that have cafes use today.  This would be sure to save money with salaries and benefits.

No Fat Here!

I want to THANK the Powhatan Today for making my salary public for the world.  Hopefully the public will finally realize that the “FAT” that needs to be cut should start with salaries way over $17,0000 a year. If you are lucky a $17,000 salary will come to about $1,300 a month after taxes if no other deductions. Believe me when I say some of us do it because we love our job to the core.  Many of us know we deserve more but realize that would require someone else to make less and that would never happen…..As you all have seen for your selves..

It’s depressing enough to think a pay cut is in our future.  But on the up side,  the information that has been provided to us and the pubic…. many will not even miss a 2 to 3 % cut from a paycheck.  Although on the downside,  when I opened that link I sadly realized my worth as a school employee…................oh and so did the entire world.  Not just the tax payers of Powhatan County Virginia that absolutely deserve to see these figures.  I guess there was no other way to provide the information to the Powhatan Today with out attaching “almost” every paid position.  A bitter sweet out come to another decision that was not given much thought apparently.

Please support the teachers and staff that help teach your children.  They work really hard and now have to tolerate disrespect as many has seen from grown adults with angry words directed in the absolute wrong directions.  Thanks You so much to all that have shown well needed support.
