Budget Woes

A number of county officials have pinned the blame for the current county budget woes on the state. Where do you think the buck stops?

The buck stops here.  Just go through some of the old BOS workshop agendas and look at the items proposed for funding.  There should be no tax increase and the BOS should stop spending for things we cannot afford and that we do not need.

It’s really quite simple: the county needs to do what all consumers must do…cut spending. I cannot go to my employer and demand a raise simply because I have over-extended yet the county has no problem demanding a raise from their employers (the citizens). Let’s see..only a .06 increase…couple that with the other tax hikes our esteemed federal government is about to levy upon us…I think you get the picture.

With the economy losses and job losses Federal, State and Local revenues are down.  Luckily for taxpayers, unlike the Feds, the State of Va. must pass a balanced budget and not fund budgets on the backs of our children and future generations.  Seems very shortsighted for the BOS to blame the state legislature.  They were more than eager to accept state funds in better times.  Now they must step up to the plate and make necessary budget cuts based on available revenues without raising taxes and causing even more economic problems for the citizens.

Ask that all county person(s) drive there own car to and from work like the rest of us have to. Ask the Rescue Squad to stop leaving the units running while they go into a place to eat. When an officer is waiting on his/her next speeder ask that they be mindful of the gas they use while idling with the heat/AC blasting. Ask that the road crews work while they are out fixing the roads instead of one working and the other five standing around. Request that sports programs in ALL school limit the number of uniforms they purchase each year, really do we need an away set and a home set? Ask the bus drivers that have to pass by the bus garage before picking up the first child to drive to the station and then start their route. Ask ALL school officials to pitch in and reduce “school supply extra’s” (example: HD TV’s in every classroom, name brand art supplies) Instead of building schools that are “Designer” with excessively decorated halls and auditoriums, pay closer attention to the functionality of the facility! Stop wanted to move an Indian from the diamond to PHS when you are about to cut teachers jobs!!! Powhatan and every county in VA need to get their priorities straight!

With everyone.  We elected these people so everyone is at fault.  We expect the world but don’t want to pay what is needed and then point the finger at those we elected.  It’s a never-ending cycle.  If pay cuts are necessary it should be across the board - not just for select groups and/or emmployees.  But, that’s just not going to happen and we all know it.
