Dress Code
Some students have recently raised concerns over not being able to wear flip-flops to school. Do you think this is an appropriate rule, or have the schools gone too far?

I have an issue with my children wearing flip flops to school as a safety issue not a fashion issue.  I’ve seen alot of accidents from preschool - at least 3rd grade involving flip flops because kids have a hard time keeping them on while playing on the playground.  You might want to take that into consideration.

I think whatever dress code the students have should apply to the teachers also. For safety reasons flip flops are an accident   waiting to happen. Do the research there are many injuries due to wearing flip flops. They are NOT shoes.

I am all for tightening up the dress code and am proud of the Board and Dr. Meara for doing so. I am also very glad that no longer will sports uniforms be worn in school if they don’t comply to the dress code. No more arguments with my daughter over why she has to comply while cheerleaders and tennis players are allowed to wear scanty outfits. Those are fine on the field or court, not during learning hours.

I am a parent of a student at PHS and also a graduate of PHS. I feel that this county should pick their battles with our children. The issues these kids have to face every day are overwhelming to them and wering fliplops are not one of the big issues. Let these kids have some freedoms. I don’t think that wering flipflops will make them learn any less do you??????? If my kid or any kid is at school getting an education then I really don’t care if they are wearing flipflops. As for the comment about corporate America ... one they are not there yet (they still need college of which you wear whatever you want there)and two there are flipflops in corporate America already. Grow up Powahtan and focus are the real issues that these kids are facing. If my kid can stay in school, get an education, stay off drugs, not get pregant , or commit suicide then I could care less about her flipflops!!!!!!!!!!!!

So whats next?  I can’t believe that people are actually agreeing with this!!  What is the harm in wearing flip flops to school.  We have been doing this for a long time and as far as I know there haven’t been any deadly accidents involving flip flops.  And as far as the “corporate world”, not everyone chooses that path.  They decide to do other productive things with their lives, flip flop wearing and all.  Colleges all across Virginia allow flip flops.  I just don’t agree with this decision at all.

Well, I have to say that I wear flip flops to my job everyday and I have a Graduate Degree. I also work in a very professional setting.

I commend you for trying to do the right thing.  What a shame but not surprising with some of these deputies around here.  Those that did not grow up in Powhatan or surrounding counties are not as bad.  I wish more people would stand up for what’s right as you did.

@nobody
Of course I did. After school I’d pull officers aside and point out the kids smoking pot in the parking lot and they’d say there was nothing they could do. That kid that passed out in the bathroom that day did it in an attempt to get sent home to his mother instead of his father (an ex con that physically abuses him) and guidance knew all of this. What did they do? Sent him to his mom for the weekend and court ordered the father not to be on school property anymore. That’s it. No authority was alerted, nothing. Powhatan doesn’t know how to address these problems.

Hah, and don’t get me started on sex ed.

To KNB:
You made the following statment:

“I was a PHS student, and I’ve seen drug deals go down at lunch tables and have had friends lose consciousness in the bathroom after excessive drug use. I’ve even seen kids smoking pot in the parking lot after school. When I first moved here a fellow student told me, “that’s what they do out here, because there’s nothing else to do.“ “

Did you ever report any of this to a teacher or school resource officer or your parents?

I agree with “Foot Loose.”  Flip-flops are not shoes.  They look trashy.  The school needs to send a message to students to teach them to dress properly, not like beach bums.
