Yes, there was a Spider Museum, located on Mill Road which has since be renovated into a residence.  Behind the Spider Museum rodeos were held.  Also beside Hatchers Restaurant there was a restaurant called Clarks.

I heard there was a lot of moon shining going on in Powhatan. Does anyone know where the stills were/are? I’d love to know more about the bootlegging that went on around here.

I would like to see something on the old white building located approx. 1/8th of a mile east of Judes Ferry & Rt 711 on the southside of the road. It appears to be an old school house maybe?

I want to know more about the Belona area. Off Rte 13. I know a railroad came through there and there was a train station, but was wondering if someone might know a little more about it.

To Jim:

Hatcher’s Restaurant?  Yes, it stood where the Red Barn is now and was torn down when Route 60 was four-laned.  When I was a kid my favorite dish was the fried chicken, which was served in a basket.  There were countertop jukeboxes at each table, plus Ask Swami napkin holders (ever see the episode of The Twilight Zone featuring William Shatner and an Ask Swami napkin holder?).  You put a penny in the napkin holder and received your fortune on a small slip of paper.  There was also a basement, with a jukebox, and it was reserved for private parties.  The proprietor was named Effie Hatcher.  Nice lady.  I miss that place, but I do have one of the Ask Swami napkin holders to remind me of it.  The closest thing to it in this area is the Cumberland Restaurant, which isn’t exactly the same but has a bit of the same feel to it.  There was a gas station next to it, and both places were popular hangouts back in the day.

To Ms. Graham:

Tell your father to keep at it.  I imagine he has a lot of knowledge on that subject.

I’d like to know more about Hatcher’s restaurant.  From my understanding it was a huge restaurant that stood where the Redbarn store is today.  Apparently it was a very popular place for all the citizens of Powhatan but was demolished when Route 60 expanded to 4 lanes.

I’d like to know more about Macon, the area around the intersection of 13 and Giles Bridge.
