Powhatan Supervisors voted 4-1 last week to table the Walmart rezoning case “indefinitely” (the law allows up to one year). What do you think of the decision?

I have read buy local and support the county, well I have seen nothing in Powhatan but fast food and gas stations. I dont shop in Powhatan I go to chesterfield. There is nothing in the county I want to buy. You cant buy clothes, shoes, household goods(at a reasonable price). The phamacys in powhatan dont offer anything that isnt over priced. What do you people who shop localy buy? You cant watch auto parts or wear a burger. If you shop at Westchester your not helping Powhatan, because look at the name WestCHESTER. Chesterfield gets the tax money not Powhatan and Target has hurt anyone yet.
Tractor Supply was a surprise but it is a pointless store that has yet to have anything I need. The only new growth in Powhatan is the Mexican resteraunts that keep popping up. They are just good for laughs. I welcome walmart

First did youall know your able to BUY American Made Products at other places ?  As an example lock sets and hardware AMERICAN MADE and some from Virginia too, in ACE HArdware etc.. but not in Walmart.

I have been coming to Powhatan for over 55 years to see my Great Uncle and Aunt who he now just passed away. Uncle E. Floyd Yates was the most honorable man I have ever known in any of the Seven Continents.

Have youall done your demographics well on Walmart yet?

An example look up Greenfield Massachusetts which is one of our four US Commonwealth’s, Virginia is one also.. My Uncle Dr. Wadman and family lived there and practiced.

Caution should be used as in even like planting a Franklinia Tree.

What is the long term effects and needs if the Gigantic Buildings get put up?

What new needs, services, TAXEs and TAX Hikes have to be implemented?

The taxes they pay will not as they never do pay for all the newly acquired needs.

It is the People choice, which need to have the adequate information not guesses and games.

Ask the current voters and taxpayers what they want, not a mere select few.

Get a referendum here in Powhatan County.

VOTE!

The sign outside of the Tractor Supply and Dollar General recently said it best…“shop locally” and I still laugh my a$$ off about that.

You people will buy your produce at Food Lion, your gas at BP, your sandwiches and sodas at Sheetz, and your auto parts at Napa.

You will allow our schools to cut teachers and force the rest to take pay cuts.

We waste money on extending our waterlines to nowhere.

You complain about our roads falling apart, yet we make ridiculous and unnecessary repairs to 60.  (In fact that arguments about ADT are absolutely ridiculous - and in fact if we are supposed to “buy locally”, why isn’t the road to Hertzler constantly packed?).

Wal-Mart does not have children, therefore their taxes send ours to school.  Wal-Mart does not own a car, therefore their taxes pay for our roads.  Wal-Mart does not employ itself, therefore employs us while our economy falls apart.  Wal-Mart does not own a farm, and historically has bought produce and meats locally.  Wal-Mart does not build itself, and therefore must hire nearby to construct.

Wal-Mart does not mean that Martin’s and an apartment complex are upon us.  If our county supervisors actually cared they would allow for us to have a Farmer’s Market so we can have our fix or they would recognize the need for larger corporate taxes.

The current economy is not a good idea to argue against the latter.

Yvonne Williams,

Just so that I understand your point..

You Dont Like Wal-Mart

But we can let other chain businesses in the county and you are ok with that because you like them.  You cant have it both ways, either you allow all businesses the same opportunity or close the gate at the county line, and let none of them in.

Walmart should come to Powhatan. I go to Walmart to do my shopping. Some say Walmart brings crime. Well Walmart hasn’t came yet but still houses and cars are being broke into.
The stores we have in Powhatan will just need to step up tp the plate. The Pharmacy can charge whatever price they want. There is no other store to compete with them. In this day in time we all have to find ways of saving money.
Powhatan is NOT what it was 25 years ago.
So to me Walmart should of been here last year. I do beleive we have enough strip malls or whatever they are called. Powhatan needs to get some real stores. We have enough fast food places.

Wake up POWHATAN…Walmart is not the answer for us!!!

Walmart’s entry into a market depresses wages and displaces better-paying retail jobs.
Walmart’s average wage is below retail industry standards.
Walmart’s average wage is below poverty level.
Walmart’s average wage is distinctly lower than the average wage for unionized competitors in key markets.
Walmart can afford to pay higher wages.
Walmart wages: not designed to support a family.

Walmart has health care plan options with cheap premiums – but they come with high deductibles.
High deductibles mean high-costs for workers and their families.
Taxpayers are forced to step in to cover Walmart’s associates.
Walmart’s health care plan fails to cover nearly 700,000 associates.
Walmart has admitted that public assistance is a “better value.”

Walmart does not lead to net retail job creation.
Walmart’s entry into an area depresses wages and displaces better-paying retail jobs.
Small businesses are particularly hurt by Walmart’s entry.
Walmart makes taxpayers pay for the consequences of its low wages.
Wal-Mart doesn’t care what your community thinks.

Walmart stores generate a significant amount of traffic congestion.
Traffic generated by Walmart worsens air quality.

Walmart has left vacant, abandoned stores throughout the country.
This means major losses of tax revenues.
Some metropolitan areas have high concentrations of abandoned Walmarts. (Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta)

Walmart closes down stores and departments that unionize.
Walmart has issued “A Manager’s Toolbox to Remaining Union Free.”
Walmart is committed to an anti-union policy.
International NGO Human Rights Watch calls Walmart “a case study of what is wrong with American labor law.”

Walmart allegedly discriminates against women.

Come on Powhatan natives…. Go to this site and get the facts ...

Instead bring in some good restaurants like Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Carrabba’s, Outback or Friday’s.

Voter and Resident of Powhatan County (District #4 - Courthouse)
Aug. 9, 2010, 01:13 AM

This entire process has become ludicrous.  I find it incredible that our elected officials are spending so much time trying to find a reason to placate a vocal minority of citizens who oppose Wal-Mart coming to Powhatan County.  I am a life-long Republican and I think it is amazing that my elected officials, most of whom claim to also be Republicans, are conducting themselves in this manner.
I live in Powhatan County - I pay taxes, send my children to public schools, and vote in local elections, but I, like many Powhatan County residents, work in Chesterfield County.  Why, because there are very few professional jobs in this county.  Unfortunately, I am not a huge landowner and my family hasn’t lived here for 200 years, but that doesn’t mean that my opinion and vote doesn’t matter.  I have read the comments of other Powhatan Today readers and they are simply out of touch or completely unrealistic.  You cannot get all you need for your home and a family with small children in Powhatan County.  I am not willing and do not have the time to go to five or six separate shops throughout Powhatan to buy groceries, toys, household cleaning supplies, dog food, the occasional box of nails, and whatever else I may need. I can do all of this at one stop at Wal-Mart and save the gas money associated with driving all over Powhatan.  I would much rather do this on my way home at a local Wal-Mart, but I can’t right now because of this fiasco.  I am sick and tired of my tax dollars supporting Chesterfield County schools and public services, but I don’t have another viable option.
It is my opinion that the majority of the shops here will not be tremendously impacted by Wal-Mart, and since when have we opposed healthy competition in the Commonwealth of Virginia or the United States of America.
It is ridiculous how our local elected officials want to involve government so much into the affairs of business.  Lets allow the free market economy to do what it will and those businesses that thrive will thrive.  If some local businesses must cut costs or diversify the products they offer - all the better.  Any jobs that are lost will be more than replaced by the ones Wal-Mart and the stores that follow will create when people from Amelia, Cumberland, and Goochland start coming to our county to shop.  I have children that will grow up here, and I think we should support controlled growth rather than no growth.  Lets allow Powhatan County to become a place that people come to shop and spend their money, not the county that you have to drive through to get to Chesterfield County.
I suggest our elected officials start doing the right thing.  Help to build a strong economy in our county that creates jobs and tax revenue rather than espousing a “closed” market that opposes all but the “home-grown” businesses.  This is not what the marjority of residents of Powhatan County want, or what the county needs for the future.
