To insufficient local market…I buy EVERYTHING I can in Powhatan. There are a few things I go to Westchester for, but the majority of my purchasing comes from Powhatan businesses (I’m obviously NOT buying TVs here). I pay a bit more because I’m supporting MY kids’ schools, MY county’s retail companies and MY community. If I wanted to support Chesterfield, I’d move there. Also, Walmart is NOT the panacea it pretends to be. When the company leaves our county, what do we think is going to happen to that big box building? What will happen to local stores? To RC Goodwyns? To Powhatan Pharmacy? 5 of the top 10 richest people in America are Sam Walton’s inheritors…why are we continuing to throw money at the rich and support the rich when people in OUR OWN COMMUNITY could use that money for the betterment of OUR community? I’ve also shopped at Walmart and I’m here to tell you, the quality of the product is NOT worth the 10 cents of savings on the items they do have cheaper. For name brand items, you can find the same items on par elsewhere. Walmart lures you in with the promise of cheap prices only to jack up prices on name brands; really in the end you pay the same or there’s such a minimal difference that you’re paying more in gas to go into Chesterfield (remember: gas is 2.55/gal). Try it, do some comparison shopping with things you’d already be buying in a given week. There really isn’t much “savings”. Rather you’ll be spending more because there will be a dearth of good jobs here in the county and you’ll be stuck with cheap Chinese made clothes that fall apart within a year. All the good employers won’t be able to keep up with the Walmart mania and Powhatan will suffer, just as many other counties have. When will we learn the lessons of our predecessors? Is money really worth it? And when will our patriotism extend to our wallets and we return to buying local American made goods? Disgusted of Powhatan

I suspect the BOS inaction will not be reflected at the polls… Vote the 4 out who are afraid to do their jobs. Are we not paying them to make decisions based on the will of the people? Oh wait a minute…they are taking their cues from the federal government… Insufficient local retail market

To “Facts to think about,” the reason that much local revenue is not generated is because there is an insufficient amount of local business development here. There simply isn’t going to be that kind of revenue generated without a Walmart type retail operation because many of the things people need to buy are not available here. Secondly, whether we like the fact or not, many people want to be able to do as much of their shopping at one location as possible because their time is limited. Even without Walmart being here currently, I go to Chesterfield to do a lot of my shopping because of the variety and because of better pricing. I would truly rather be spending my money in Powhatan to support our schools and emergency services. Tucker4

The board of supervisors need to schedule the vote. What’s the hold-up? Bring Walmart here now. We need the shopping options and the tax revenue and the jobs. Stephanie57

I sure bet all the folks from Amelia and Cumberland who drive straight through Powhatan to get to the Chesterfield Walmart would LOVE to have their own Walmart. Wake up Powhatan - we may miss our chance for an incredible opportunity for progress! Bob Rucker of Powhatan

I don’t like the decision one bit. The overwhelming majority of average folks in the County want Walmart. Why make us drive all the way to Chesterfield every time we want to buy a shirt? Not many folks hiring people right now too. Show some back bone and get er done. old time powhatan guy of Powhatan

For every $100.00 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68.00 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. If you spent that in a national chain, only $43.00 stays here! If half the employed population spent $50.00 each month in locally owned independent businesses, it would generate more than 42.6 billion in revenue. N.B. Oliver of Powhatan

Are we really thinking rational? Out of the 3,000 some youth who could work - how many jobs are they given in the county to keep them busy during the summer? With all the violence that have swept our county has no one maybe thought - if the young people had something to do - then just maybe - they would keep their idle minds busy HMMM! Walmart would bring jobs to our county and revenue as well - boy why is there so mcuh self-centererness and selfnish in the county for a buck! More jobs in the county - more to spend in the county - more to give in the county! Not rocket science! john smith

This is good news. Maybe our elected officials will listen to the county taxpayers opinions. Better not to rush into something that could ruin Powhatan County. Submit Your Answer Below Commenting is not available in this weblog entry. |
