When it comes to hiring smokers, Bon Secours making the right call

In the paper of November 23 the Editor’s Opinion Column berated Bon Secours for making smoking a consideration for hiring. I’d like to take an opposing point. I think Bon Secours is right on this issue.

I have 26 years of direct experience in management in hospitals in eight different states. I have presented training programs in person to management personnel from all walks of life such as airport executives, food manufacturing management people, school and college administrators,… Read more...

Approval of apartment plan would be disaster for the county

It was a full house at Rosa’s on Thursday Sept 8th when the community meeting was called to order. Jason Moore was introduced to the public and proceeded to explain in detail Balzer and Associates rezoning and conditional use permit request for the Stavemill tract of land next to Stavemill Rd.

He filled in the packed audience with the details of the proposed plan. Balzar and Associates and Shady Oaks Development Corp are planning to build a large apartment complex off of Rt 60 on… Read more...

Why I fly my flag

It is hard to believe it is the 10th anniversary of the tragedy of September 11, 2001.  As this anniversary crept closer, I began receiving a variety of messages from my email buddies encouraging me to fly the flag on this date reminding me of all the flags that flew after the events of September 11th occurred and, of course, “pass it along.” The thing is I started flying a flag long before this tragic event and still do – every day. As I drive around Powhatan, I see others… Read more...

Work groups allow residents to help resolve county’s issues

The idea of involving citizens in solving problems faced by our community has recently been criticized and dismissed.

For instance, it has been suggested that chartering work teams or study groups is a way for individual Supervisors or the Board of Supervisors-as-a-whole to avoid accountability for making decisions or to excuse Supervisors from doing the hard work of government. Or more nefariously, that the Board can “stack the deck” of appointees in order to get a pre-ordained… Read more...

Capital program was eye-opening experience

I have to admit, before my internship as part of VCU’s Virginia Capital Semester Program (VCS), I had little involvement in state politics.

I never followed the General Assembly sessions or thought about introduced legislation. After all, I was an International Studies major who wanted to travel the world and help people living in poverty. I never wanted to become a politician. The term had always held a negative connotation in my mind, but oh, how my opinions have changed… Read more...

Haiti: The other side of the world

Recently, I was asked to join a medical team that was going to render medical care to the people in Haiti. Our plan was to set up a clinic in a church in Dumay, a small town on the outskirts of Port Au Prince.

The medical team was affiliated with Christian Service International Ministries. With the help of co-workers who covered for me the week I was gone, administration, and our generous doctors, I was able to participate in this venture.

I knew this would probably be the hardest… Read more...

Supervisors silenced public

A scary thing happened at the joint Board of Supervisors/School Board meeting last Thursday, March 10. The BOS – elected public servants – silenced the public.

School Board representative Debbie Jones, with the support of her SB colleagues, requested that a public comment period be added to the agenda, as public comment is allowed at all public SB workshops and meetings. Anticipating this request, the BOS responded by having the county attorney read a prepared statement in… Read more...
