School budget issue from the view point of a PHS Senior

image

Dear Editor,

As a part of the requirements of my Art III class at Powhatan High School, we are to create artwork based on a current event in our society. This helps us understand what is going on in the “real world,” but in a way we as students can interpret it.

For our last current event assignment, we were to find articles that addressed the economic situation in our county or state and show how this affects us, the student body. Since school funding has been an increasingly… Read more...

School Board members want to set the record straight on retreat

Dear Editor:

A recent article made mention of comments attributed to several Supervisors during their budget retreat.

The comments were critical of the School Board. The statements were misleading and misrepresented the facts. It is unfortunate that during a time when the two Boards must work together that some Supervisors felt a need to launch this unwarranted attack.

Here is the background to this incident. The Board of Supervisors annually conducts budget meetings with… Read more...

There’s room at the library for all of us

Dear Editor,

I just had to write because you really got me thinking after I read your ‘New Year, New You’ column in the December 30, 2009 “Powhatan Today.”  I imagine most people believe that librarians have read all the classics, or as you put it, the 100 greatest books of all time.  True, I was an English major and consequently read fine literature.  But I just want to point out that even Dickens’ novels started out as serials in magazines. … Read more...

Two views on Walmart

Walmart’s impact may be on wildlife

Dear Editor,

I’ve been reading a lot lately and listening to several opinions regarding Walmart coming to Powhatan.  Personally I don’t agree with the way Walmart operates, but then again there are a lot of companies, politicians, etc. that I don’t agree with.  I understand that the county needs to attract businesses to support our county.  I am in agreement with having businesses that appeal to our… Read more...

Concerns over pound ‘time limit’ unfounded

Published Nov. 4, 2009 in Powhatan Today Newspaper

Dear Editor,

I would like to respond to those individuals that have sent e-mails and letters regarding the 30-day “policy” of euthanizing animals at the Powhatan Animal Pound.

I have learned this “30-day policy” e-mail flurry started from a volunteer of an animal group who had visited our pound. Obviously they were either misinformed or misunderstood what was said during a conversation with… Read more...

New policy will rob many dogs of a second chance

image

Why? I’ve lived in Powhatan for eight years, I love the rural setting, and the small town feeling it offers, the church I attend and the dear friends I’ve made.

During these eight years our taxes have increased four times, our property value has doubled and I’ve witnessed the county make “some” improvements that were either not needed or not necessary. With this being said, I have to ask WHY, why has the sheriff’s department now decided to enforce a strict… Read more...

Company offers transparency in dealings with Walmart

I am writing this to address the application filed by Walmart to rezone property adjacent to the entrance road to our Powhatan quarry.

At this early stage of Walmart’s rezoning process, it is important to us that we explain how Luck Stone is connected to the Walmart application for rezoning.

Luck Stone was approached by Walmart during their project planning and was asked to provide an access easement over our private entrance road to the Walmart site.

After a detailed… Read more...
