| Sep 30, 2009 Residents should greet Walmart with open arms — and wallets Our family moved to Powhatan (we were die-hard Chesterfield residents) in 1976. The reason for uprooting and moving to a new county was because we did not want to have our children bussed to Richmond schools when we had a Chesterfield County school in the backyard. We never regretted our decision after falling “in love” with Powhatan’s countryside scenery and its friendly people. I can remember when the first red light was installed. I also remember hearing folks say that… Read more... Sep 23, 2009 Can’t we just agree that boards can disagree? ![]() In a piece called “A Tale of Two Boards” a “Rules of Engagement” was proposed to regulate communications between the supervisors and school board. The “Rules” are modest and direct: 1) Quarterly meetings between the boards 2) Phone contact between individuals to address misunderstandings and 3) Written rules to “crystallize how we are going to behave towards one another.” Another rule which was not written about, but which… Read more... Sep 17, 2009 Bombing was only the start of long, tragic tale Little did I (or anyone else for that matter) realize that the hysterical telephone call on December 21, 1988, getting me out of a business meeting at the Virginia Museum, was just the beginning of 20 years of terrorist violence against the West. We couldn’t see the World Trade Center or the hundreds of other acts of violence that would change our world forever. Various plans are presently being debated but at the time AARP expressed support for these health care plans all included certain basic provisions. All plans included rationing of health care, and stated that the care you receive will be dictated by a government committee with no provisions for appeal. You will be totally at the mercy of a Health… Read more... Sep 02, 2009 A tale of two boards As editor of the Powhatan Today, you have not been the only one asking about the perceived friction between the board of supervisors and the school board. In the next few paragraphs, I’d like to address this issue in an attempt to clear the air and to make a modest proposal for a path forward for all of us, as we try to do the people’s business. I write as one member of the board of supervisors; nothing herein should be construed as anything but that— one member’s… Read more... Aug 05, 2009 Transportation and people watching Songwriter, singer, and worship leader, Audrey Hatcher Woodhams moved to Switzerland with her ecologist husband, Doug, and baby, Abe. This is the account of her adventures… When you’re approaching an intersection, or driving down the highway in Switzerland, and you see a big flash of light come from the approaching overpass, you know you’ve been caught. A few weeks later you will receive your ticket in the mail. We know this from experience. The day… Read more... Jul 29, 2009 Three rooms and a view Editor’s note: Songwriter, singer, and worship leader, Audrey Hatcher Woodhams moved to Switzerland with her ecologist husband, Doug, and baby, Abe. This is the account of her adventures… When Doug and I got married, we moved into a beautiful duplex on the south side of Nashville; two bedrooms, a large kitchen/dining room, and a nice-sized living room, all on a spacious half-acre plot of land, and all for $800 per month. We filled our side of the two-car… Read more... |
