Do your homework before heading to the polls

When choosing for whom to vote, we need to look deeper than just what we see on the TV and in the newspaper.  Knowing the candidate’s background, level of education, past accomplishments, former experience and what they stand for can give you a better idea of the type of official they will be.

For example, would your vote for Governor have been influenced if you found out one of the candidates was a former lawyer for the ACLU? To me, that’s a real big negative. To others… Read more...

Getting through tough times

We all have tough times we have to get through.  There are many situations you have no control over. However, what you do in response is completely up to you.  First of all, don’t get caught up with stress, worry, and fear.  They cause anxiety, agitation, and perhaps feelings of depression.

Living with events you can’t change is part of life.  Attempting to change things you have no control over causes frustration.  Once you recognize something is beyond… Read more...

What’s the big deal about using the word “Retard”?

A lot of people are talking about the movie Tropic Thunder that is opening in theaters last week.  One of the reasons that it is being talked about is that the characters use the term “retard” over and over.  They use it the same way that kids do all the time, to jokingly insult one another.  The people who made the movie, DreamWorks and Paramount, and many of the critics who have reviewed it,… Read more...

My Point of View

On the beach in late August, I pulled my chair down close to the ocean but not too close; I didn’t want to be soaked by the rushing waves and end up buried in the sand. I settled in a spot where the waves barely reached me and only occasionally washed a gentle froth over my feet. And then I watched.

My Point of View

Having more eyes looking can only have a positive outcome. I think this is true in most things we do in crime prevention, electing leaders, producing new products and preparing budgets, to mention a few. Giving more attention to these processes can give us more efficient results, reduced overall costs and hopefully better government. The rest of this article will focus on the Powhatan County Operational Budget, but could also apply to personal budgets, state budgets and of course the federal budget. … Read more...

My Point of View

It did not seem ironic during the scorching of the sun to celebrate reaching for the moon.

Shortly after high noon, July 21, 2008, on the grounds of Capitol Square in Richmond, that is just what more than 4,000 people gathered to do. It seemed only right.

More than 400 years after the first Africans were brought to be sold as slaves in America, Virginia was dedicating a monument to individuals who fought the inequality of racially segregated schools in the Commonwealth. Likenesses… Read more...

My Point of View

Have you ever considered domestic violence and your child? It seems to be the forgotten danger, something that could never happen to “our” children.

When our teenagers begin to date, the last thing we typically think of is the possibility that they will be abused. Yet statistics prove that “our” children are just as vulnerable as any others are to dating/domestic violence. In a 2006 study by the U.S. Bureau of Justice, 500 random young women ages 14 to 22 were surveyed.… Read more...
