It’s time to circle the wagons

When I was growing up, we had a neighbor who would say, “It’s time to circle the wagons folks,” when times were difficult.

We all knew what he meant with his allusion to the wagon trains of days gone by. Every night when it was dark and scary the wagon train would circle the wagons and create a safe place for all the travelers heading west. They would share stories and songs and sometimes provisions and always give each other the emotional support needed. Together they… Read more...

What happens in Washington hurts Habitat projects here

If you think the actions of Congress have no direct, local impact, think again.  Believe it or not, the budget squabbles in Washington, D.C. are hurting the mission of your local Habitat for Humanity chapter, and making a tough economy even more challenging.

Habitat-Powhatan needs your donation to help us through this extremely difficult economy.  Consider this situation, and see if you are able to help.

After months of orientation meetings, interviews, screening… Read more...

Taking a closer look at the redistricting process

We will continue to receive over the next few weeks new census data on Powhatan.  As a result, we will be looking at redistricting to insure that each of the five districts contains more-or-less equal numbers of residents, so that each supervisor will represent an equal number of residents for each vote that comes before the Board of Supervisors.

In this MPOV, I will as objectively as possible outline the situation and put the facts about redistricting on the table, without,… Read more...

Project Discovery is worth saving

State legislators are considering a cut to a program designed to help at-risk students have a chance at a better life. I am a seventh grader at Powhatan Jr. High School who is involved in Project Discovery, which is at risk of losing funding and not being able to help students better themselves. This would not be good for Project Discovery. I am a member of this group that services people with learning disabilities, educational disadvantages and low-income families. Project Discovery… Read more...

PHS volleyball coach deserved some recognition

Clark Menger, the coach of the Powhatan High School volleyball team was NOT named Southside District Coach of the Year AGAIN.  Clark is undefeated in the district for his entire five year tenure as head coach and has never been Coach of the Year.  He has won 66 consecutive matches in the district.  His win/loss record over that time is 101-15 – many of those losses coming to AAA teams.  He has probably put more young ladies on college teams than the rest of the district… Read more...

Arguments for a Walmart here don’t hold water

The September 1 issue of Powhatan Today included two columns written regarding the Walmart zoning decision currently pending before the Board of Supervisors. One, written by Todd Rojcewicz, was clearly in favor of bringing Walmart to Powhatan. The other was submitted by Dan Jones and while written in defense of the Board’s decision to delay their vote, included a few comments which prompted a response.

Mr. Rojcewicz mentioned that the Walmart site is located within the designated… Read more...

Former principal says community support helped during tough time

This July, in a 3-2 vote, the Powhatan County School Board decided that my position as principal of Pocahontas Elementary School be terminated and reassigned me to another position within the school system. This decision came as the result of an ongoing investigation of a financial matter in which I had no involvement.

I sincerely want to thank everyone who attended the school board meeting on Tuesday, August 10 and who have sent cards, notes, and e-mails to show their support for me retaining… Read more...
