Annual Robbie Green tourney a success once again

Contributed Report

Apr 02, 2008

Even with this year’s Robbie Green Memorial Softball Tournament scheduled on Easter Weekend, there were twelve teams that took time to remember and honor the late Robbie Green, a Powhatan Deputy killed in a car accident in 2006.

The proceeds from this year’s tournament were donated to the Powhatan Sheriff’s Office in support of Project Life Saver.

“Project Life Saver” is a program that provides tracking bracelets for those with Alzheimer’s or autism.

Retired Powhatan Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Tommy Broughton opened the weekend event by introducing those involved in the opening ceremonies.

Deputy John Mattox and County Administrator Carolyn Cios welcomed all and introduced the importance of Project Lifesaver for the victims and their families.

The “Robbie Green Memorial” Tournament committee included Scott Broughton, Warren Tooley, Garlin Horne, Adam Sadler, Robbie Moore, Charlie Green Jr. and Charlie Green Sr.

During the ceremony, Broughton asked the participants to have a moment of silence in memory and respect for all fallen officers.

Following the invocation, the National Anthem was sung by Robbie Green’s nephew Zach Dickerson and the first pitch was thrown by Robbie’s son Chaytor Green.

Organizers wish to thank the twelve teams that participated this year, including the Bombers, Willis Mountain, Chesterfield, Interior 2000, Mules, Shooters, Hanover Law Dogs, Team Bud, Holly Hills Baptist Church, Herlong Tree Service, Powhatan Sheriff’s Office, and the Slammers.

They also offer thanks to Warren Tooley and Powhatan County Parks and Recreation Department, and to those that gave their time to umpire. Those umpires were Kevin Adams, Bartley Siebart, Tom Hauser, Buck Rogers, J.C. Rogers, Craig Bodette, Curtis Hare, Glen Wilkerson, Ricky Tucker, Linda Lunsford and Harry Taylor.

Sponsorsfor the event included Yardworks Rental and Supplies, J.A.S. Builders, Powhatan Screen Printers, Herlong’s Tree Service, Autoparts Plus, Norman Dickerson Family, Bobby Oakley Automotive, Hobo Heaven, All Star Paving, Old Coach Antiques, Sign Design, Bennett Funeral Home, Neil Spicer Lawn Care, Darin Vauter Tree Service, John Lewis Landscaping, Turner’s Barbecue & Catering, Progressive Autoworks, Tuck’s Lawn Care, Clodfelter’s Heating and Air. Inc., R.M. Bishop Plumbing, Current Electric Inc., Weeks Custom Cars, and In Memory of Jere Pruitt.

“Thank you to all that made this tournament a success,” said Charlie Green, Robbie’s father and one of the tournamant organizers.

“Through your efforts we were able to donate to Project Lifesaver $3,643.”
