Baseball player nabs radio spot By Roslyn Ryan
Jan 09, 2008 If Powhatan baseball fans listening to sports radio station WRNL on the afternoon of Dec. 28 wondered why the new voice they were hearing sounded familiar, it is time to solve the mystery. The voice belonged to Powhatan High School baseball player Chad Byerly, who joined host Wes McElroy during McElroy’s afternoon show The Final Round. Byerly was given an hour of air time courtesy of his father Mike, who bid on the opportunity at a silent auction for the Kidney Foundation of the Virginias. And while Chad insisted he wasn’t nervous before going on the air, he admitted the fact that he was talking about sports—something near and dear to his heart—made it much easier. “It was just another thing,” he said. “Just like talking on the phone.” Byerly and McElroy spent part of the hour discussing game predictions, as well as Byerly’s favorite sports moment of the year, the Red Sox’ World Series win. Byerly said his brief time as a co-host was “pretty cool,” but said he wasn’t sure if it had done much to steer him towards a career in radio. Still, when asked if he would be willing to fill in again if asked, the 17-year-old senior didn’t hesitate. “Oh yeah, he said. “I’d be there in a heartbeat.” (0) Comments • Email This Article |
