Best of the Season

Dec 12, 2007

For the Indians, 2007 was a season of highs (beating Courtland, winning the third regional championship in a row) and lows (injuries, a heartbreaking loss is the state semifinals). We asked two coaches, a preeminent stat man, and a sportswriter to hit the highlights

Best win:

Charles Blankenship, statistician: 13-12 comeback victory over Lafayette in the Regional Final
Ernie Henderson, coach: Courtland
Jason Campbell, coach: I would like to say the eleven wins, I prefer to win.
Greg Taylor, sportswriter: 40-0 over Louisa. Nothing like payback and shutting that announcer up

Best catch:

CB: Although I wasn’t there to see it in person, it has to be Emmett Brown’s 43-yd TD reception from Shawn Minor with 3:47 to go in the win over Lafayette.
EH: Emmett Brown vs. Lafayette
JC: Any of the catches by Emmett Brown.
GT: Kevin Price from Shawn Minor on a blind, over the head toss for a 2 pt conversion against Prince Edward

Biggest play of the year:

CB: Same as above.
EH: Fumble recovery vs. Lafayette
JC: Taron Hampton’s long run at Brunswick. When he ran over their cornerback and finished the run.
GT: Brown’s TD catch against Lafayette

Biggest disappointment:

CB: 33-21 loss to Sherando in State Semi-Finals
EH: Sherando
JC: Losing to Monticello and then to Sherando. I am not very fond of losing.
GT: Amount of injuries this year and oh yes, the Sherando loss

Best newcomer:

CB: Josh Morris
EH: Josh Morris, Vance Hendren
JC: Kirk LaVance Hendren
GT: Vance Hendren

Biggest improvement by a player from 2006:

CB: Shawn Minor’s move to starting quarterback where he played extremely well for a sophomore. He was a leader by example and his excellent passing and running skills were a definite plus for the year.
EH: Derek Christovich
JC: Phillip Livesay improved a lot especially on the 27 toss.
GT: Shawn Minor and Shawn Henderson

Funniest moment:

CB: When Deon Berry was well on his way to a TD run at Bluestone before someone turned off the power and ended the game early.
EH: Lots
JC: The funniest moment is hard. I would have to go with anything that Kevin Price does and his carefree attitude about what the other kids think.
GT: The night the lights went out in Bluestone.

Most likely to make a special play not mentioned in newspaper:

CB: Shawn Henderson and Tahliek Taliaferro
EH: Colin Christovich
JC: Hunter Gordon on defense. He created problems for everyone and would make the play while others would get the tackle.
GT: Eric Watts for his punting

Most likely to take a licking and get back up:

CB: Taron Hampton
EH: Mike Cable
JC: Josh Morris at Louisa
GT: Shawn Minor

Most likely to come back bigger and badder next year:

CB: Mike Cable, Hunter Gordon & Jay Jackson
EH: Mike Cable
JC: Hopefully all that remain.

Most cerebral:

CB: Derek Christovich and his younger brother Collin
EH: Derek Christovich
JC: Derrick and Collin Christovich
GT: The Christovich brothers, Derek and Collin

Most comical:

EH: Alex Spitz
JC: Kevin Price
GT: Kevin Price

Most likely to exaggerate his football stories to his wife and kids someday:

CB: Kwamaine Marshall
EH: Taron Hampton
JC: Tahliek Taliaferro. He will exaggerate these stories tonight, tomorrow etc.......
GT: Mike Cable

Most likely to go into coaching:

CB: Kevin Price
EH: Collin Christovich
JC: Nathan Mullins. 2015 Little league Coach of the Year
GT: Nate Mullins

Reference to comment that Mike Cable would be most likely to exaggerate his football stories someday:
If the people running the show could get his name and number right once in awhile he might get a little credit due and NOT have to exaggerate one day!!
The only good part about that comment is that the other’s mentioned those whose names are most prominent in every article anyway, so maybe having his name amongst those is a “compliment”??? Hmmmm....
What does Greg Taylor know about Mike Cable anyway?
