Briefs and scores week of 05/07/08 Powhatan Junior High Softball undefeated Last Wednesday, April 30, the Indians defeated Goochland, 7-0. Jennifer Redmond went 1 for 1 and scored two of the Indians runs. Katelyn Harrison contributed with a double and two RBIs. Sierra Ford contributed from the mound striking out 13 of the Goochland batters. Thursday, the Indians defeated Amelia in a grueling doubleheader winning their first game 8-4. Cameryn Smith started the first game with a hit and eventually scored. She led the Indians offensively the first game going 2 for 4 and scoring 2 of the Indian runs. Katelynn Harrison also contributed going 3 for 4. Ellen Kirtner, Krysta Matthews and Paige Kern contributed with great hits as well. Jen Ryan started off the rally at the top of the fifth inning with a walk. After an intense first game, the Indians continued their winning streak without looking back, defeating Amelia for the second time 9-4. Addison Johnson went 1-1, Michelle White went 3-3 with a triple and 3 RBI, and Hannah Meyer went 1-1 with a double. Madison Tilghman’s and Maddie Hutchison’s combined pitching efforts kept the Raiders to three hits and struck out eight of their 20 batters. The girls will travel to Nottoway and Central the next week in hopes of continuing their quest for a second district title.
On April 30, the Powhatan Indians junior high baseball team traveled to Goochland to play a hard-hitting Bulldogs team. The Indians put on an offeinsive display en route to a 15-4 win. The Indians were lead by Tyler Allen who went 4-4 with 5 RBI. Also leading the Indians were Gordon Clark who went 1-1 with 3 RBI and Alex Huguchi who went 2-3 and was fearless on the base path stealing 4 bases. The defense all but shut down the Bulldogs with solid pitching and fielding. The team also played in a grueling doubleheader against Amelia that tested the Indians’ will to win. In the first game the Indians set the tone early with great pitching from Tyler Duty who pitched three strong innings allowing one earned run while striking out 6. Following was Tyler Allen who came in and dominated by allowing no earned runs with 6 strikeouts in two innings, leading the Indians to a 13-1 victory over Amelia. At the plate the Indians were lead by Matt Lyman who was 2-3 with a double and a single and Bobby Ogelsby who went 1-2 with a single. In the night cap the Indians put on a hitting clinic on their way to a 20-3 victory. Leading the way for the Indians were the young stars Patrick O’Neil who went 3-4 with a double, Tyler Allen going 2-2 with a triple, and Logan Kennedy who went 2-3 with a double. The PJHS Indians rounded out the week at Nottoway for a tough conference game. The game was close early until the bats came alive for the boys and the contest was sealed with a score of 16-6. Cody Haislp was the starter on the hill for the Indians and was relieved by closer Matt Lyman. Offensively the Indians were led by Tanner Phillips breaking out of a slump with a homer and triple and Tyler Allen and Alex Higuchi chipping in a couple hits each respectively. Tyler Duty also had a good game with a stand up triple. The Indians ran their overall record to 13-1 overall clinching the Southside District Western Division with a conference record of 7-0. They will compete in the playoffs beginning May 12 at PJHS. The winner will likely face off with Halifax on May 14 for the Southside District Crown.
