Briefs and scores (week of 05/14/08) PJHS Lady Indians are Division champs The Indians softball team has ended their season undefeated. Last week they defeated Nottoway, Central and Dinwiddie, earning the title of Western Division champs. While Nottoway and Central did not go down without a fight, it was the Lady Indians who came out on top. After beating Nottoway 4-2, the team traveled to Central of Charlotte and defeated them 9-5. The Indians took the lead in the first inning with walks by Jennifer Redmond and Cameryn Smith. The game remained tight and even until the top of the sixth inning when Addie Johnson took one for the team, followed by Allison Stokes being walked and runs from Michelle White and Cameryn Smith. The Indians secured the win with hits from Maddie Hutchison. Key defensive plays were made in the bottom of the seventh by Paige Kern and Kateyln Harrison. Sierra Ford made the final play by striking out the last batter for Central with the bases loaded.
The Powhatan Junior High baseball team traveled to Charlotte Courthouse on May 5 for their last regular season district game of 2008. The Indians defeated the Central Bobcats 13-3 and in doing so became Divisional Regular Season Champs. The Indians improved their overall record to 15-1 for the year with their only loss against Franklin County the first game of the year in the Halifax Invitational Tourney. The Indians were led by strong pitching performances by Tanner Phillips and Tyler Allen, allowing two hits over six innings with 10 strikeouts. At the plate the Indians were led by Luke Scherzer who went 1-3 with a towering homerun and Matt Lyman who went 2-4 with two singles. In non-conference action the Indians bested Salem Christian Wednesday and finished the regular season with a mark of 16-1 playing solid team baseball.
