The Lady Indians fell to Greensville 67-32 last Thursday, in a contest that pitted the pluck and tough defensive skills of the Powhatan girls against the daunting size of the Eagles’ program.

“They had a superior height advantage,” said Bowman of the Greensville team, who put a 6’5” and a 6’3” player on the court.

“We played hard,” said Bowman, “But we were unable to match up with them in size.”

Greensville got off to an early lead, taking the first quarter by a score of 14-2, and dominated the second and third periods as well. While the Lady Indians rallied to outscore their opponents 15-11 in the final quarter, the Lady Eagles took the contest.

Erin Lonon once again lead Powhatan in scoring, putting up 13 points. Senior Alex White contributed the second highest total with six, followed by Jessica Deleon with five.

Height was no doubt a deciding factor in the loss, but the team may still have been recovering from a tough loss to Fluvanna the night before in Powhatan.

Despite trailing Fluvanna 20-14 at the start of the second quarter last Wednesday, the Powhatan girls managed to bring the score to pull within two at 27-25 heading into the second half.

Powhatan’s Hadiyah Abdul-Saboor tied it up quickly at the start of the third period, and the two teams would remain within five points of each other for the duration of the game.

With Fluvanna ahead by one point with 36.2 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Powhatan’s Erin Lonon made a free throw to tie the score. Unfortunately, after a heated battle in overtime, the Lady Indians succumbed to what Bowman described as “poor court management” and recorded the 57-55 loss.

Despite the twin losses, Bowman said she has never had reason to question her girls’ commitment.

“They played hard, they always play hard,” said Bowman.

“I never have to question them on the floor. They always give me their maximum effort.”

Next up for the team will be a road trip to face district opponent Prince Edward.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
